Football Defeats Thomas More Saturday, 30-7

#FlyerFootball Adds Another To The Win Column At Home

DAYTON – The University of Dayton football team took down the Thomas More Saints on a cloudy afternoon at Welcome Stadium on Saturday.
 
The Flyers (2-0) continue their strong start to the season while the Saints (0-2) still search for their first win.
 
GAME RECAP
1st Quarter – Dayton 13, Thomas More 7
  • To start out the first quarter, Dayton forced Thomas More to punt, putting pressure on the Saints' offense early. 
  • On Dayton's first drive, the Flyers rushed 55 yards, including a 43-yard rushing touchdown from senior Gavin Lochow to make the score 7-0. 
  • Senior running back Luke Hansen continued the first-quarter momentum for the Flyers, scoring a 28-yard run for a touchdown after three consecutive first downs on the next possession. 
  • After a missed extra point for the Flyers, the Saints drove down the field to make the score 13-7 late in the first quarter. 
  • At the 1:13 mark in the first quarter, the Flyers won a challenge to overturn a costly fumble to punt the Saints back to start their final possession of the quarter. 
 
2nd Quarter – Dayton 13, Thomas More 7
  • The Saints punted the ball away to start the quarter but regained possession after an interception in their own territory early in the quarter. 
  • Flyers answered the Saints with a sack for a six-yard loss from junior defensive end Jace Schaefer, leading Thomas More to punt. 
  • With 7:53 on the clock, junior Ross Coppock recovered a fumble forced by junior Steven McCalmont on the Flyers' own 44-yard line, causing the Saints to lose one of their challenges. 
  • Flyers go for it on 4th down, with 5:52 left of the clock in the half, turning the downs over on the Thomas More 48-yard line.
  • The Flyer defense was able to hold the Saints to a no-good 37-yard field goal attempt late in the half, keeping the score 13-7. 
  • The Flyers rushed the Saints' line, causing a fumble and a punt to give Dayton the ball back with 0:54 left in the half. 
  • Senior quarterback Bryce Schondelmyer completed a 45-yard pass to senior wide receiver Michael Mussari, putting the Flyers in scoring position with just seconds left on the clock, but the next pass was intercepted in the end zone for a Saints touchback to end the half. 
 
3rd Quarter – Dayton 20, Thomas More 7
  • The Flyers started off the half with a 43-yard kickoff return from Lochow and put senior punter Ben Lavelle to work to push the Saints 46 yards back. 
  • Dayton's defense held the Saints, giving the Flyers a chance to drive 42 yards into the red zone to score with Schondelmyer competing a 8 yard pass to Lochow, making the score 20-7. 
  • Thomas More attempted to respond, but a sack for a 7-yard loss by sophomore linebacker David Curl III killed the Saints' momentum, forcing them to punt with 4:07 left in the third quarter. 
4th Quarter – Dayton 30, Thomas More 7
  • UD started the quarter third and nine at the Dayton 27-yard line and pushed 49 yards before getting the Saints to jump offside for a 5-yard penalty, putting them in scoring position. 
  • Graduate student kicker David Maurer put points up on the board for the Flyers with a good field goal from 28 yards, 23-7 Dayton. 
  • Former PFL Defensive Player of the Week (Week 1) Javawn Brooks earned his third interception of the season, pulling the pass down in the Saints' red zone and returning it for 26 yards. 
  • Dayton runs down the clock with a 71-yard drive, earning sophomore Noah Spencer his first career touchdown with a 9-yard rush to give the Flyers the win. 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
90 – Michael Mussari led the Flyers with 90 yards receiving on five catches.
1 – Three of UD's rushers found the endzone on Saturday including Luke Hansen, Gavin Lochow, and Noah Spencer
19 – Bryce Schondelmyer completed 19 of his 27 passes for 211 yards and a touchdown.
8-1-2  – David Curl III made his first career start and recorded team-highs of eight tackles, one sack, and two tackles for loss.
 
UP NEXT
The Dayton Flyers will travel to Richmond, Ky., for their first away game of the season to take on the Eastern Kentucky Colonels Saturday, Sept. 19 at 6 p.m. ET.
