Volleyball Outlasts Toledo For A Five-Set Win

Dayton Ends Non-Conference 8-5

TOLEDO, Ohio – The University of Dayton volleyball team came out on top over Toledo in five sets (25-19, 18-25, 25-16, 22-25, 16-14) at the Savage Arena on Saturday.

Leading 10-8, Dayton pulled ahead on a four-point run with a kill for Charlotte Vinson, a block assist for Abigail Cresse and Vinson and a pair of Toledo errors for a 14-8 lead. The Rockets cut the Flyers' lead to four in the first set, but a kill from Cresse claimed the first set for Dayton.

The Flyers took a 3-2 lead in the second set, but a pair of four-point runs for Toledo allowed them to outpace Dayton to tie the match at one set apiece.

In the third set, UD started up 3-1 with kills from Kamryn Hunt and Cresse. Ahead 9-6, Dayton took advantage of errors by Toledo along with a kill from Gabriela Machin Borges to widen the lead to 12-6. The Flyers maintained a strong lead in the rest of the set, taking the third set on a block assist for Kaleigh Meritt and Addi Gallentine and a kill for Meritt.

Dayton had a four-point lead early in the fourth set with a 14-10 score. A five-point run to make the score 19-16 gave Toledo some significant momentum. A block for Meritt and Gallentine followed by back-to-back kills for Meritt tied the set at 19 apiece. After tying the set at 22-22, a three-point Toledo run sent the match to a fifth set.

The Flyers trailed 4-0 to start the fifth frame, making things close on a three-point run with two kills from Cresse. Down two at 7-5, Dayton rallied back for a 12-10 lead. After Toledo tied the set at 12 and 14 points, a kill for Gallentine and an attack error gave Dayton the win.
