Biography

At Dayton:

2013
Hunter appeared in nine games for the Flyers during the 2013 season. He recorded 36 receptions for 726 yards and scored four touchdowns. Hunter was also the main punt and kick returner for Dayton. As a punt returner, he had 16 returns for 160 yards. As a kick returner, he had 21 returns for 514 yards and one touchdown. Hunter was also presented the team’s Most Improved Player Award for his efforts as a wideout. He was named First Team All-PFL as a kick returner and Second Team All-PFL as a wide receiver.

2012
Already the Flyer career record holder in kickoff returns and KO return yardage, Gary Hunter moved inside to a slot receiver position for the 2013 season after playing outside the past two seasons. He averaged 22.6 yards per touch as a pass receiver (25.0 yards on 7 catches), punt returner (25.5 on 4) and kick returner (21.2 on 20) in nine games in 2012.

2011
Hunter appeared in 10 games for the Flyers in 2011. He led the team in kick returns (31) and kick return yards (666), in 2011.

2010
As a freshman, Hunter served as the Flyers’ main kick returner. He led the team in kick returns (28), kick return yards (762), average kick return yards (28.2). In nine games for the Flyers, Hunter averaged 84.7 kick return yards per game. Hunter received the ROTC Cannonball Award, which goes to the team’s top newcomer. 

Career Note:
Hunter is believed to be the only Flyer football player to have four special teams touchdowns in his career (available statistics are incomplete prior to 1950). Kelvin Kirk (the original Mr. Irrelevant) had three from 1974-77. Hunter had what is believed to be the first kickoff return for a touchdown by a freshman in the history of University of Dayton football when he had an 82-yard scamper against Valparaiso in 2010. He returned a kickoff for a TD in his freshman, sophomore, and senior seasons at Dayton and had a 77-yard punt return in the 2012 opener at Illinois State.

Personal:
Son of Derrick and Cynthia Hunter…Born on January 29, 1992…Majoring in Mechanical Engineering…In high school, Hunter was a three-sport letterwinner – football, basketball and lacrosse. He was a team captain, MVP, and first team all-conference in football. Hunter was also All-CHSL in basketball and in track.
