In September of 2015, the University of Dayton announced the hiring of Ryan Cypret to lead the infield defense and Flyer offense.
"I am ecstatic about the opportunity to be coaching at the University of Dayton," said Cypret. "This program, athletic department, campus and community is truly special to be part of. I am eager to be working for Coach Vittorio and begin the daily grind with the Flyer baseball players."
Cypret is coming from Western Michigan University, where he was an assistant for two seasons. For the Broncos, he headed up the infield defense and assisted in all offensive areas.
The newest addition to the Flyer staff began his coaching career as an assistant with the Chillicothe Paints in the Prospect League. In 2013, the Paints made it all the way to the Semifinals in the Playoffs. The Paints finished first in doubles, home runs, and slugging percentage in the Prospect League that season.
In 2014, Coach Cypret helped lead the Bronco defense to the best fielding percentage (.970) in the MAC and the second highest in school history (.971 in 1972). Shortstop Andrew Sohn was drafted in the sixth round by the St. Louis Cardinals making him the first position player off the board in the MAC in 2014 and second-highest shortstop drafted in WMU history. It was just the second time ever and first since 1998 Western Michigan posted two wins in the MAC postseason. In 2014, WMU hit 19 triples, most for the program since totaling 26 in 1989. In 2015, the Bronco defense finished 27th in the nation in double plays per game. Middle infielder Kurt Hoekstra was drafted in the 21st Round by the Atlanta Braves. Broncos Catcher, Brett Sunde, was also taken in the 18th round by the Oakland A's.
Cypret played his college ball at the Ohio State University where two seasons he played for Hall of Fame Coach Bob Todd and the final three under Greg Beals. He was a three-year starter at second base and two-year captain playing in 189 games for the Buckeyes, starting every game at second base his final three seasons. In his playing career, Cypret finished with a .270 batting average, 181 hits, 92 RBI, 127 runs scored, nine home runs, 28 doubles and four triples. As a sophomore he was second on the team with a .323 batting average and as a junior, was 10th in the Big Ten in runs scored and fifth in walks in 2012. He was a team captain his final two seasons, helping the Buckeyes finish with a second-place Big Ten finish in 2013.
Ryan Cypret is the son of Greg Cypret, long time Associate Head Coach at the Ohio State University under Hall of Fame Coach Bob Todd where he had a great hand in a combined 15 total Big Ten Championships. Greg Cypret was an All-American short-stop for the University of Missouri where he is also in the Hall of Fame.
Ryan Cypret holds a Bachelor's Degree in Sports Management from The Ohio State University while minoring in Communications.
