In July of 2017, the University of Dayton and head coach Jayson King announced the addition of Tommy Chase as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator to the Flyers' staff.
Chase joins the Flyer coaching staff after spending the past season at Army West Point as an assistant coach and recruiting assistant. He coached hitters, outfielders, baserunners and was the first base coach for the Knights.
Prior to his season in West Point, Chase was the graduate assistant coach at Southern New Hampshire University where he served as an outfield and hitting coach, camp coordinator, strength and conditioning coordinator and recruiter. In his time at SNHU, the Penman set a school record for wins with a 50-7 mark and the offense set records for hits, runs scored, doubles, triples, home runs, runs batted in, stolen bases, walks, and hit-by-pitches.
Chase also spent time a season with the United States Naval Academy, serving as a volunteer assistant coach. In his time with the Midshipmen, he worked with hitters and infielders, coached first base, provided scouting reports, ran camps and clinics, and helped run the social media accounts. Navy set the record for most wins in a season with 37 and won the regular season Patriot League Championship.
In his first job in the collegiate baseball world, Chase was as video coordinator for UC Santa Barbara. During his season with the Gauchos, Chase's responsibilities included all video-related activities, as well as assisting with daily practice, prospect camps, youth clinics, scouting reports, and daily office responsibilities. UC Santa Barbara was ranked as high as No. 12 in the nation during the season.
Chase is a 2012 graduate of the University of Notre Dame, where he played for four seasons for the Fighting Irish. He was a co-captain in his senior season and was a member of the 2012 Academic All-District team. He was also the Ray Siegfreid Leadership Award winner, which is awarded annually to one senior at Notre Dame who exemplifies the qualities of leadership, generosity, devotion to the Catholic faith, and affinity for athletics. Chase was also one of five national finalists for the John Wooden Citizenship Cup Award.
