Michael Orts joined the Dayton coaching staff in the spring of 2024 as the Flyers' new quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator

Orts, 37, came to UD from Baldwin-Wallace, where he was offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2022 and 2023

A 2009 graduate of St. John's (Minn.), Orts spent nine seasons on the staff of his alma mater as the pass game coordinator and quarterbacks coach.  While he was on the staff there, the Johnnies won four Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) championships, made six NCAA Division National Playoff appearances, and won 77 games while losing just 18 for an .811 winning percentage.

During his time with Saint John's, Orts coached the 2019 Division III passing yardage leader, the 2018 Division III passing efficiency leader (who also threw the most TDs that season in D-III) and the 2015 NCAA Division III passing efficiency leader.

In the middle of two stints covering his nine seasons at St. John's, Orts served as the co-offensive coordinator, pass game coordinator, quarterbacks, and wide receivers coach at NCAA Division II University of Minnesota Crookston for one season.

Orts was a four-year letterwinner and team captain as a senior.  He played on three MIAC Championship teams and his teams reached the NCAA  Division III playoffs all four seasons.  His coach was college football's all-time winningest coach, John Gagliardi.

Orts earned a Master of Science in Physical Education from Southwest Minnesota State University and Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences from St. John's.

Orts and his wife Anna have three children -- John,  Aubrey and William.
