Gip Hoagland is in his 17th season as the Dayton Flyers' men's golf head coach for the 2025-26 season. During that time he has helped solidify the Flyer program and continues to recruit high-caliber golfers who succeed on the course, in the classroom and out in the community. With a passion on developing the complete student-athlete, Hoagland has brought a level of energy and enthusiasm to the table that is infectious and inspiring.
Ben Cors claimed medalist honors at the 2025 Atlantic 10 Championship on the strength of a career-low round of 66 (-6) in the second round, earning him the opportunity to compete in the NCAA Urbana Regional. Following the 2024-25 season, the Flyers had two players qualify for the U.S. Amateur in Cors, winner of the 2025 Dayton Met, and Victor Caliguri.
Henry May paced the Flyers at the 2024 Atlantic 10 Championship, turning in a ninth-place finish. For the season, May posted a team-best 72.47 scoring average with three top-10 finishes and 12 rounds of par or better and he finished his time at Dayton carrying the program's lowest career scoring average of 73.28.
The Flyers equaled their best finish at the 2021 Atlantic 10 Championship, taking second place overall, on the strength of freshman Henry May's individual title. With the win, May became the first Flyer to qualify for national postseason play as he competed at the NCAA Noblesville Regional. In conference postseason awards, Schmidt was tabbed the A-10 Rookie of the Year and both he and May were named to the A-10 All-Conference Team. For the season, the squad posted the program's best four-player team scoring average of 292.78.
In 2017-18, the Flyers claimed a second-place finish at the Atlantic 10 Championship, the program's best result in the post-season tournament. Three players were placed on the All-Conference Team, another program best, in Tripp French, Caleb Wolters and Domenic Maricocchi. Dayton started off the season with a first-place finish at the Joe Feaganes Invitational hosted by Marshall, which included a team season-low round of five-under par 279.
During the 2016-17 campaign, Dayton claimed the team title at both the Northern Kentucky Collegiate Classic and during Atlantic 10 Match Play. Additionally, the Flyers picked up one second place and two third place finishes among their eight team top-five placements. Dayton took third place as the year-end Atlantic 10 Championship. Senior Nick Paxson was honored by the league after being named to the A-10 All-Conference Team.
Under Hoagland's guidance in 2015-16, the team won the Wright State Invitational, and the Flyers finished in the top five at seven tournaments, including a third place finish at the A-10 Championship. The team also had three players receive conference awards. Nick Paxson was named A-10 Co-Golfer of the Week on two occasions, and Ryan Flick was named A-10 Rookie of the Week in October. Tripp French was selected to the A-10 All-Conference Team at the end of the season in a vote by the league's head coaches.
The 2014-15 campaign saw sophomore Nick Paxson qualify for the U.S. Amateur. Paxson also finished tied for fifth place at the Atlantic 10 Championship. Throughout the season, Hoagland helped the Flyers to four top-six finishes, including a sixth place finish at the Atlantic 10 Championship.
In addition to helping his team excel on the course, Hoagland also promotes success in the classroom. Several of his players have been named to the A-10 All-Academic Team and to the A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll. Additionally, two former golfers have earned the Dayton Presidential Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award in Chris Woeste (2010) and Andrew Steffensmeier (2014).
Hoagland continues to help the program excel with his experience and understanding of today's game. He is a Class A PGA Professional and also serves as Head Golf Professional at NCR Country Club. In 2018, he received the Southern Ohio PGA Assistant Golf Professional of the Year Award.
During the 2008-09 campaign, Hoagland served as a volunteer assistant on the Flyer men's golf staff.
Prior to UD, Hoagland served as tournament chairman for the Dayton Chapter of the Southern Ohio PGA. In 2005 he was named the Southern Ohio PGA Apprentice of the Year and served as the Apprentice Association Chairman for two years.
In 1993 Hoagland, a Dayton native, graduated from the University of Dayton with a degree in business administration.
