FLYER MEN PLACE SECOND AT UD FALL INVITATIONAL

Oct. 4, 2004

KETTERING, Ohio - Junior Melissa Juve (Akron, OH) shot a tournament-low 77 to win first place and give the Flyer women a second-place finish at the University of Dayton Fall Invitational Monday at the NCR Country Club. The men finished in second place with an overall score of 312, 16 strokes behind Oakland University who won the tournament with a score of 296.

Juve, who finished 7-over par on the North Course, was first out of 27 golfers and helped the UD women gain their best finish of the year. Juve's one-day score of 77 is her best finish of the season and just one stroke off her career high.

The Flyer women ended the tournament with a team total of 331, and a second place finish out of six teams right behind Oakland University who won the tournament with a score of 326 in the one-day tournament. The University of Cincinnati finished in third place behind Dayton with a score of 344, followed by Dayton's B with 354, Oakland's B at 373 and Robert Morris rounded out the women's side with a 386.

Juve was followed by sophomore Melissa Gaus (Noblesville, IN) who finished 5th with an 82 (+12), Junior Tiffany Ruhe (Ottawa, OH) posted an 84 (+14), senior Jen Edgin (Columbus, OH) carded a 84 (+13), and senior Carolyn Fuchs (Louisville, KY) shot an 88 (+17).

Sophomore Sam Morton (Centerville, OH) led the UD men with a one-round score of 75 (+4), which was tied for fourth place out of 24 golfers in the men's field. Morton's 75 was only 5 strokes off the tournament champion Brian Stuard from Oakland, who shot a 70 (-1) on the grueling 7,055-yard championship South Course in windy conditions. It is the same track which hosted the 1969 PGA Championship (won by Ray Floyd) and will host the 2005 US Senior Open.

Senior Brett Gould (Dayton, OH), who was the A-10 Men's Golfer of the week a week ago, finished with a total score of 77 (+6) and tied for sixth place. Senior A.J. Quinter (Minster, OH) also shot a 77 and tied fellow teammate Gould for sixth place. Junior Adam Myers (Franklin, OH) shot a 78 (+7), and seniors Tim Skufka (Chardon, OH) and Bill Everding (St. Louis, MO) both shot 80 (+9) for the Flyers. This is the best finish of the year for the Flyer men.

Oakland University won the men's tournament, followed by UD's A at 312, UD's B at 319, Oakland's B at 326, and Cincinnati at 326.

The Flyer men return to action next Monday and Tuesday at the Eastern Illinois University Invitational in Tuscola, IL. The women compete next on October 18 and 19 at Western Carolina in Cullowhee, NC.
