CORAOPOLIS, Pa. - Freshman Rob Chappell fired a final-round 76 in difficult scoring conditions Tuesday, leading the University of Dayton men's golf team to a second-place finish at the Crowne Plaza Colonial Classic hosted by Robert Morris University. Chappell was the tournament's individual medalist with a two-day score of 148 (+4) at the Montour Heights Country Club.

After carding an even-par 72 on Monday, Chappell went four-over Tuesday on the par-72, 6,795-yard layout. He edged the day-one leader, RMU's Jimmy Tomaseski by a stroke, becoming the first Flyer to capture individual medalist honors at a tournament since the 2003 spring season.

"It was a very difficult layout. The course was hilly and the greens were very fast," UD head coach Brad Smith said. "We were disappointed not to win it, but I was very proud of the way our guys played. I told them that 600 probably was going to win it and we were right there."

Seniors Adam Myers and Brett Gould each finished tied for fourth overall, posting a pair of 150s to finish two strokes off the pace. Myers went 76-74 while Gould went 73-77.

Sophomore Jeff Heisler shot a 157 (76-81) to finish tied for 19th and sophomore Matt Doherty posted a 172 (86-86) to finish tied for 36th.

As a team UD shot 605 (297-308) and finished in second place, three strokes back of Loyola College (602). The Greyhounds set a tournament record with a 292 Tuesday and jumped from fourth after Monday's 310 to claim the team championship. Duquesne University (614) finished third followed by the University of Toronto (615), IUPUI (622), Robert Morris (625) and Hampton University (658).

The course yielded just two sub-par round all tournament (a 71 from RMU's Tamaseski Monday and a 71 from Loyola's Will Shriver on Tuesday) and played to a stoke average of 79.25.

UD returns to action Oct. 17 and 18 at the IPFW Fall Classic in Ft. Wayne, Ind.
