WOMEN'S GOLF FINISHES EIGHTH AT UD FALL INVITATIONAL, MEN TAKE TITLE

KETTERING, Ohio - The University of Dayton men's golf team captured the team championship and the women finished eighth in the UD Fall Invitational on Monday at the NCR Country Club in Kettering. Sophomore Matt Doherty led the Flyers with a 75 and finished tied for third overall while the women were paced by the 83 from sophomore Mary Kane.

On the women's side, Kane led the way with an 83. Junior Melissa Gaus posted an 84, followed by junior Lindsey Greuter (86), freshman Danielle Hawksley (87) and senior Melissa Juve (88). Michelle Borchers (85), Laura Grande (90) and Malia Widder (97) played as individuals.

The women's individual medalist was Hilery Wilson from Cincinnati who carded a one-under par 69 - the only sub-par for the tournament. UC won the team championship with a 295, followed by Toledo (296), Xavier (313) and Eastern Kentucky (315).

The men's team captured its first title of the season as all five Flyers shot rounds of 80 or better in difficult scoring conditions on the South Course at NCR Country Club. The famed South Course, which hosted the 2005 U.S. Senior Open this summer and has also hosted the 1969 PGA Championship, played at par 71, 7,055-yards Monday in windy conditions. The same tee and pin locations that were used in the final round of the U.S. Senior Open were also used today for the men's tournament.

Doherty's 75 (+4) matched his low round of the season. He finished in a tie for third overall, leading the Flyers for the first time in his career. Senior Brett Gould fired a 78 to finish in a tie for seventh while senior Adam Myers, freshman Rob Chappell and sophomore Jeff Heisler each carded rounds of 80 to finish tied for 14th overall.

Junior John Zaller fired a 77 to lead the Flyers' B squad to a fifth-place finish. Freshman Matthew Friend posted an 80 while freshman Nick Trubee and Mark Juve each carded 83's. Sophomore Sam Morton shot an 87. Mike Molnar (86) and Mitch Custenborder (84) played as individuals.

The men's individual medalist honors were shared by Justin Wegner of IUPUI and Scott Aker of Cedarville who each shot a two-over par 73. UD (313) was first in the 12 team field, with Cincinnati (316), Cleveland State (320), IUPUI (322) and the Dayton B (323) rounding out the top five.

The UD men return to action Nov. 7-8 at the Western Carolina Intercollegiate. The women are off until the spring season.
