DAYTON, Ohio - The heavens opened up on the Dayton-Wright State men's soccer game Friday at UD's Baujan Field shortly before halftime. Dodging raindrops and lightning, game officials and coaches conferred for close to 75 minutes before declaring a no-contest around 10:15 p.m.
No stats count from the game. If the UD and Wright State resume the game, it will start from the beginning. They will make a decision later next week.
Wright State took a 1-0 lead into the intermission on the strength of Josh Grossman's penalty kick to the lower left corner in the 19th minute. Antti Arst's foul in the penalty box led to Grossman's free shot at the UD goal.
Three minutes later, Arst's shot at redemption went wide left of an unprotected goal.
Ben Murray's header toward an empty net 26 seconds before halftime was knocked away at the last minute by Raider defender Anthony Smerk.
UD's next game is at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at Xavier. It will be UD's A-10 opener.
