BUIES CREEK, N.C. - An opening round 80 from sophomore Nick Trubee highlighted the day for the Dayton Flyers as UD finished round one of the Lonnie D. Small Spring Classic.

After injuries limited him to one event in the fall season, Trubee took advantage of his opportunity. Trubee shot a 39 on the front nine and a 41 on the back to wrap up day one in a tie for 56th among individual golfers.

"What is great about Nick is he gives you everything he has on that day," said head coach Drew Tyrer. "He played better than his score indicated. He hit some really good shots and it was nice to see him do well."

Right behind Trubee was senior Sam Morton who shot an 82. Morton mirrored Trubee with a 39 on the front nine, but a 42 on the final nine holes.

Senior John Zaller finished the day in third on the team shooting an 84. Freshman John Hennessey rebounded from a 46 on the front nine to record an 89 on the day.

"We had our youngest lineup of the year and some guys who haven't had a lot of college golf tournament experience," Tyrer said. "But, I saw some good things out there. We hit some birdies and made some nice shots. We just have to work on our scoring."

As a team, UD finished with a total score of 334. Freshman Nick Miller shot a 93 to wrap up the individual scoring.

Tuesday's final round is scheduled for a 10 a.m. EST shotgun start.
