BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - After qualifying for the 2009 U.S. Amateur in August, junior
Jeff Hodapp continued to riding the momentum of his success and continue it with the Dayton Flyers.
Hodapp fired rounds of 71 and 70 to finish the day three-under and in second place after the first two rounds of the John Piper Intercollegiate.
Just two strokes behind of the lead, Hodapp's 70 in round two was a career best in a Flyer uniform. His efforts have Dayton in seventh overall after UD shot a 300 and 299 as a team.
After recording a 79.1 stroke average last season, Hodapp recommitted himself and made slight, but significant adjustments to his game. Not only did his work ethic and attitude improve on-and-off the course, but a minor adjustment in his clubs helped him straighten out a hook that he developed his sophomore season.
The result over the previous two months have been the best golf Hodapp has played in his time as a member of the Flyers.
Hodapp's caddy during the U.S. Amateur qualifier, sophomore
Michael Oberschmidt, enjoyed a solid opening day as well. Oberschmidt fired an even par 72 in round one and a 75 in the second round.
Oberschmidt is tied for 13th overall and the 72 was a career-best as well.
But with six freshmen on the roster, the Flyers also understand the importance of patience with the younger players.
One of those fab freshmen,
Mike Griffin, shot rounds of 78 and 77 in his UD debut and finished third on the team.
Junior
Chris Woeste got off to a slow start with a 79 in round one, but bounced back with a 77 in the second round. Freshman
Sean Keating was one stroke behind Woeste mirroring him with a 79 in the first round and slightly improving with a 78 in the second.
The third and final round of the tournament will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 15. The event is held at the Stone Ridge Country Club.
