UD MEN'S GOLF OPENS THE 2010 FALL SEASON AT THE FOSSUM/SPARTAN INVITATIONAL

In the three months since they last teed off, the status quo has not changed much for the Dayton Flyers men’s golf team.

And that's a good thing.

When the Flyers open their season at the 2010 Fossum/Spartan Invitational, they will send four of the five players who represented UD at the 2010 Atlantic 10 Men’s Golf Championship in May.

That continuity has coach Gip Hoagland entering the fall season with ambitious expectations. The Flyers look to capitalize on that ambition improving the quality of their schedule in hopes of a stronger finish at the conference championship this season.

“It’s a big tournament and a new one for us,” Hoagland said. “Going to a Big Ten tournament is a big step for the program. We are playing at a higher level of competition from last year.”

Dayton will send seniors Chris Woeste and Jeff Hodapp, junior Michael Oberschmidt and sophomores Sean Keating and Brenten Blakeman to compete at the event. Woeste, Hodapp, Oberschmidt and Keating played at the A-10 Tournament last May.

Hosted by Michigan State, the Fossum/Spartan Inviatational will take place from Sept. 11-12 at the Forest Akers West course in East Lansing, Mich.

With a 9 a.m. ET shotgun start each day, 36 holes will be played on Saturday and 18 on Sunday.

Live scoring will be available for fans by clicking on the link below. Competing against Dayton will be host Michigan State, Alabama State, Bradley, Canisius, Detroit, Evansville, Houston Baptist, Iona, Jackson State, James Madison, St. Francis (PA), Waterloo, Valparaiso and Youngstown State.

From a modest beginning in 1966, the Fossum/Spartan Invitational has developed into a showcase of fine collegiate golf. In 1996, the tournament celebrated its 30th anniversary and was added to the College Golf Foundation/Rolex Golf Tour as one of the top 75 collegiate golf tournaments.

The tournament annually draws some of the top collegiate golfing talent in the nation to the Forest Akers West Course.

Dayton concluded the 2009-10 season with a fourth-place finish at the 2010 Atlantic 10 Men’s Golf Championship. The Flyers return eight golfers from last season including Keating, a First Team All-Atlantic 10 selection in 2010.
