Two University of Dayton football players were honored by the Pioneer Football league Sunday for their work in this week's Dayton 45-38 win in overtime over San Diego. Redshirt senior linebacker Colin Monnier was named Defensive Player of the Week, while senior quarterback Will Bardo was named Co-Offensive Player of the Week.
Monnier was honored for the second time this season as Dayton ended San Diego's 9-game PFL win streak. The Flyer co-captain had 15 tackles, including 2.5 for a loss. He was credited with a half sack that helped stall a San Diego second-quarter drive and later picked up a quarterback hurry that helped force an interception inside the red zone in the third quarter.. It was Monnier's fourth double-digit tackle effort this season.
Bardo amassed 361 yards of offense and was responsible for four clutch TDs. He was the Flyers' leading rusher, finishing with 136 yards and two TDs on 17 carries. Bardo's 61-yard first-quarter run provided Dayton's first score and his one-yard TD burst in the second possession of overtime was the final margin. He finished the day 17-of-32 for 225 yards and a two TDs, including the game-tying score with 27 seconds left in regulation. Of his 17 pass completions, 13 went for first down yardage.
Bardo shared this week's honor with freshman QB Austin Gahafer of Morehead State, and the Flyers and the Eagles will square off against each other this Saturday in a matchup of second-place PFL teams. Both teams are 3-1 in the PFL (one game back of undefeated Butler) and come into the game with a three-game winning streak.
