MIROMAR LAKES, Fla. - The University of Dayton men's golf team closed out the gall portion of its 2013-14 schedule Monday after wrapping up play at the Xavier Cobra-PUMA Invitational at Miromar Golf Club. Junior
George Rohde, III, led the Flyers with a five-over-par total of 221 (76-71-74) for the 54-hole event, finishing in a tie for 22nd place overall. As a team, UD posted rounds of 306-291-311=908, coming in 12th place.
Florida Gulf Coast claimed the tournament title, posting team scores of 282-286-287=855 while the host Musketeers finished in ninth place (305-288-300=893). FCGU's Edward Figueroa and Ryan McCormick tied for first place honors at 12 under, six strokes off the next competitor.
After tallying an ace on 17 during Sunday's second round, Rohde fired the team's low round on Monday turning in a two-over 74. Senior
Andrew Steffensmeier turned in a third-round score of 77 and finished in a tie for 43rd (77-74-77=228 +12).
A rough go of it on the final nine holes resulted in an 80 third-round score for freshman
Nick Paxson, dropping him down to t-48th for the tournament (76-73-80=229 +13) and classmate
Caleb Wolters finished in t-59th after his 84 on the final 18 holes (77-73-84=234 +18).
Rounding out play for the Flyers was junior
Craig Purpus with a 54-hole total of 27-over 243 (82-81-80). After chipping one stroke off his total each round, Purpus finished in 70th place.
Dayton will return to play in February with Wexford Intercollegiate the 17th and 18th.
