RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Dayton volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (17-25, 25-21, 22-25, 13-25) decision at Virginia Commonwealth Sunday afternoon at VCU's Siegel Center. Sophomore
Jill Loiars led the Flyers with a career-high 14 kills to go with four digs and two blocks.
Dayton (7-9, 1-3 A-10) senior Megan Campbell also posted double-figure kills with 11 and sophomore Jenna Jendryk set 39 assists. Sophomore Janna Krafka was the team's leading passer with 16 digs.
VCU (15-4, 4-0 A-10) out-hit UD .321 to .204 and the Rams recorded 60 kills to the Flyers' 49.
The Flyers jumped out to the 3-1 lead in the first set but fell behind, 8-4, after back-to-back Ram kills. The margin stretched to six at 13-7 in favor of VCU following three straight Ram points, forcing the Flyers into a timeout. Trailing 23-14, UD scored two straight and then held set-point but eventually fell, 25-17, to give VCU a 1-0 lead in the match.
Dayton tied the score at four-all in the second set and it was tied again at 6-6 after a kill from Loiars. Jendryk served up an ace to give UD the 9-8 lead and a 3-1 Flyer run gave Dayton a 15-13 advantage half-way through. Senior Shayne Brown's solo block gave the Flyers the 20-16 lead and a double block from Brown and sophomore Angel Agu stretched the lead to five, 23-18. The Rams rallied but kills from Campbell and Agu sealed the 25-21 second-set win for the Flyers, evening the match at one set apiece.
VCU got off to a quick start in the third set, taking the 5-1 lead in the early going. A Ram attack error cut the lead to two, 9-7, and a 4-1 Flyer run set the score at 13-12 in favor of VCU. Three-straight Ram points gave the home team the four-point, 20-16 lead but Loiars earned sideout for the Flyers with a kill. The advantage was cut to one, 20-19, but VCU reached set-point at 24-21 and held in for the 25-22 win in the third set.
Trailing by one, 4-3, the Flyers gave up a 5-1 Ram run to fall behind by five, 9-4, in the fourth game. The VCU lead was nine, 17-8, when a kill from Brown earned the Flyers the serve. Seven would be as close as UD would get down the stretch and VCU claimed the 25-13 fourth-set win and took the match, 3-1.
The Rams were led by Romana Kriskova with a match-high 22 kills and 15 digs for the contest's only double-double. Amanda Love passed a match-high 20 digs.
The Flyers continue with a four-match road stint with a trip to Bronx, N.Y., next weekend. Dayton and Fordham will square off at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 11 in Rose Hill Gym.
