DAYTON - The University of Dayton Flyers defeated St. Francis Brooklyn by a score of 78-58 to move to 3-0 on the season in front of a crowd of 12,183 Saturday at UD Arena. Playing in its Opening Round mainland game in the at EA Sports Maui Invitational, Dayton used an 11-3 run midway through the second half to turn a three-point margin into double digits, and a 30-7 run to gain complete control of the game.
St. Francis, who opened the year with an upset win at defending ACC champion Miami, suffered its first loss of the season and is now 2-1.
Senior captain Vee Sanford came off the bench for the first time in his Flyer career, and turned in his best performance of the season to lead the Flyers with 14 points. The starting backcourt of Jordan Sibert and Khari Price both had solid games as each contributed 13 points. Center Matt Kavanagh also broke into the double-digit scoring column with 10 points.
Dayton's other two starters, Devin Oliver and Dyshawn Pierre, both helped the Flyer effort. Oliver played a well-rounded game with nine points, six rebounds, and five assists, and Pierre added eight points. Devon Scott crashed the boards all afternoon and led the Flyers with seven rebounds.
In the first half, the Flyers jumped out to an early lead and held a 32-25 advantage heading into the locker room. For the second game in a row, Price hit a buzzer-beater to close the half and give Dayton the momentum. Sibert led UD at halftime with eight points.
SFU Brooklyn was able to cut the Flyer advantage to three on three separate occasions, but with the score 43-40 at 11:50 to go in the game, Dayton took over. A Sanford jumper started an 11-3 run over the next three minutes, and then an acrobatic fast-break layup by Sibert capped off an impressive 30-7 Flyer burst that made the score 73-50 by the four-minute media timeout.
Saint Francis was led by Jalen Cannon's 14 points and eight rebounds.
The Flyers are back in action Wednesday, Nov. 20 as they travel to Atlanta to take on Georgia Tech and former head coach Brain Gregory at 7:00 p.m. ET. It will be the first time in UD history that the Flyers have played a former head men's basketball coach. The game will be available on ESPN3.com.
