IOWA CITY, Iowa - The No. 14/16 University of Dayton women's basketball team opened the 2013-14 regular season with a resounding 89-54 win over UC Riverside in its first game of the 2013 Iowa Hawkeye Challenge. Junior Ally Malott led all scorers as she equaled her career high with 20 points after making nine of her 10 attempts to go with four rebounds, three assists and two blocks for the Flyers. Dayton is now 1-0 on the season while UC Riverside falls to 0-2.

Dayton shot 51.5 percent from the floor and 85.7 percent from the line for the game compared to UC Riverside's 33.8 percent and 56.3 percent. The Flyers out-rebounded the Highlanders, 44-35, while the fouls were nearly even at 16 for UD and 17 for UCR.

Also for the Flyers, sophomore Amber Deane was the only player to record a double-double for the game and was the second of five Flyers that posted double-figures scoring. She went 6-of-10 from the field and 5-of-6 from the line for 17 points and she grabbed 10 rebounds while dishing out four assists. Sophomore Kelly Austria tallied 14 points, three assists and two steals while Senior Cassie Sant added 13 points and six rebounds. Rounding out the double-digit scores for Dayton was junior Andrea Hoover with 11.

UD's final margin of 35 proved to be its largest of the contest. Heading into the second half, the Flyers held the 20-point lead and held onto to the 20+ lead for almost all of the first four minutes of the frame. Malott made the first bucket of the second 20 minutes but Sant took over, rattling off the next eight points. The Highlanders cut the lead to 15, 59-44, after a 7-0 run but the Flyers bounced back, answering with eight-straight points, fueled by five points from Austria.

The Flyers never looked back and would trail by no less than 22 the rest of the way.

Dayton scored the first basket of the game 31 seconds into the contest and never looked back. A long-range jumper from Malott gave UD its first double-digit lead of the first half at 14-4 and she did it again at the 8:43 mark as the Flyer lead was 10 at 26-16. Austria gave Dayton the 14-point lead, 33-19, with her three-point basket with just under six and a half minutes remaining in the half.

The advantage bloomed to 20, 47-27, on Cornelie-Sigmundova's put-back went in with 41 seconds left. Hoover drained two free throws at the end of the half and the Flyers went into the locker room with the 20-point lead, 49-29. Deane and Malott chipped in 12 points apiece while Deane and Cornelie-Sigmundova grabbed four boards each in the first 20 minutes for the Flyers.

The Highlanders were led by Natasha Hadley with 13 points, one of three players in double-figures scoring for UC Riverside. Kiara Harewood narrowly missed the double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds.

The Flyers return to action Sunday afternoon with a 2 p.m. ET/1 p.m. CT match-up against the host Iowa Hawkeyes to close out play at the Hawkeye Challege. The game will be video streamed live via the Big Ten Digital Network and audio streamed live via daytonflyers.com.
