NO. 9 MICHIGAN DOWNS WOMEN'S SOCCER, 4-1, IN EXHIBITION OPENER

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The University of Dayton women's soccer team opened the exhibition portion of its 2013 schedule with a 4-1 loss at No. 19 Michigan Friday evening.

The Flyers took 10 shots on the night, five of which were on goal, led by sophomore Nicole Waters with three. Sophomore Ashley Campbell also had a multiple-shot outing with two attempts, one of which was on goal. Senior defenders Meghan Scharer and Sarah Senoyuit played the entire 90 minutes for UD.

The Wolverines' Corinne Harris found the back of the net first with a goal in the 19th minute to give U-M the early 1-0 lead. Senior midfielder Juliana Libertin netted the equalizer 10 minutes later from 25 yards out to knot the two squads at one goal apiece.

Michigan scored again in the 34th minute with a header off a free kick to retake the lead, which would prove to be the game-winner, and Harris scored an insurance goal with less than three minutes to play in the period. The Wolverines held the sizable 3-1 lead heading into the intermission.

In the first half, shots were even at seven apiece with the Wolverine keeper tallying four saves. Fouls were nearly equal as well with UD committing eight miscues to U-M's seven and the Wolverines were called offside three times.

Michigan's Harris completed the hat trick with her third goal of the game in the 52nd minute to give the Wolverines the 4-1 lead. For the second half, U-M took seven shots to UD's three and the fouls were even at five apiece.

Junior Heather Betancourt started in goal for the Flyers, putting in 45 minutes of work. She collected one save and suffered three goals against while being charged with the loss. Freshman Elizabeth James played the entire second half, tallying five saves to one goal against.

Taylor Bucklin earned the win in goal for the Wolverines. She had four saves to one goal against in 70 minutes of action between the posts.

The Flyers return to action Sunday with their second preseason exhibition contest, this time against Miami (Fla.) at home. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. at Baujan Field and admission is free.
