WASHINGTON, D.C. - The University of Dayton volleyball team fell 3-2 (22-25, 25-19, 25-23, 25-27, 9-15) at George Washington Saturday night for the Flyers' first loss in Atlantic 10 Conference play. Junior Alaina Turner led UD offensively with 17 kills to go with 13 digs for her 13th double-double of the season.

Several Flyers posted career highs on the night including freshman Amber Erhahon with 12 kills, senior Rachel Jones with 20 kills, freshman Jane Emmenecker with 53 assists and freshman Jessica Sloan with six service aces. Junior Janna Krafka passed a season-high 30 digs and senior Isolde Hannan chipped in 10 kills as well.

It was a 4-1 run to open the first set for Dayton (16-5, 5-1 A-10) and the lead was six, 9-3, over George Washington (13-5, 4-1 A-10) after three consecutive Colonial attacking errors. A kill from Erhahon set the score at 14-9 in favor of the Flyers but the Colonials rallied for six-straight points to take over the lead at 15-14. The set was tied at 16 points apiece when GW used a 7-2 spurt to break open a 23-18 advantage. UD was able to hold GW at set point three times but the Colonials' Chidima Osuchukwu laid down the game winner as George Washington picked up the first set, 25-22.

The second set remained close in the early going as George Washington took a slight 5-3 lead to open the frame. Dayton tore through an 11-0 run to break open the 14-5 advantage mid-way through the set. A kill from Jendryk put the Flyers ahead seven, 20-13, but the Colonials would cut it to four three times late in the game. UD would go on to win the second set, 25-19, on a kill from freshman Jessica Sloan to even the match at one set each.

A service error for the Colonials opened the third set but George Washington scored five straight to go ahead, 5-1. The GW advantage was five, 8-3, but a Hannan-Jendryk assisted block cut it to two, 10-8. Krafka served up an ace to pull the Flyers even with the Colonials at 12-all and the two squads proceeded to trade points. We saw eight more ties before UD was able to pull in front by two, 22-20, and GW signaled for timeout. A Sloan service ace set Dayton up for set point at 24-21 and a kill from Erhahon sealed the third-set win, 25-23, for the Flyers.

The fourth set started with a service ace by Emmenecker and followed with a solo block by Hannan but a 5-1 run by GW put the Colonials up, 5-3. The George Washington advantage was 15-12 when Dayton rattled off three straight to tie the set at 15-all. Trailing by two late, the Flyers used a 4-1 run to pull ahead 20-19 and the UD lead was two, 23-21, when GW called for a break. Out of the timeout, Dayton earned match point at 24-23 but it would take extra points to decide the set. The Colonials pulled out the 27-25 fourth-set win to force a fifth frame.

After a 4-1 start for GW, UD evened the score at 4-4 with a Jones service ace. The Colonials used a 4-0 run to open an 8-4 advantage and the two teams switched sides.
