Box Score (PDF)DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Dayton volleyball team got back into the win column Tuesday night with a straight-set sweep of Morehead State at Frericks Center. Senior Isolde Hannan had nine kills in 13 attempts with only one error to hit at .615 and also tallied a match-high five blocks for the Flyers.
Also for the Flyers, junior Alaina Turner added nine kills, nine digs and four blocks while junior Jill Loiars chipped in seven kills and four blocks. Junior Janna Krafka passed a match-high 10 digs and freshman Jane Emmenecker set a match-high 31 kills.
Dayton (17-5) got off to a slow start in set one, falling behind Morehead State (0-20), 3-1. The Flyers trailed the Eagles through a 15-15 tie but went ahead by one, 17-16, after a MSU attacking error. A 3-0 UD spurt gave the Flyers the 23-19 advantage late and Dayton won the set, 25-20, with an Erhahon-Turner block.
Set two was all Dayton, start to finish. The Flyers racked up a 10-point lead at 12-2 using a 7-0 run capped by a Krafka service ace. The advantage was 10 again at 17-7 following a Loiars kill and Hannan laid down a kill for UD to set the score set the score at 21-11. An Eagle net violation set up set point for the Flyers and UD took the second frame, 25-13, with a kill from Turner.
The Eagles would not go down without a fight and battled the Flyers into extra points in the third set. The two squads were tied four times early on when Morehead State was able to go up three, 8-5. Dayton scored three straight, capped by an Emmenecker service ace, to even the score again at eight points apiece. After the Flyers' eighth point the Eagles' head coach was issued a red card, giving UD a free point and the Flyers followed with three more points to pull ahead, 12-8. The Eagles clawed back and squared the set at 15-all and then battled back from a three-point deficit to event the set at 23-23 late in the frame. A kill from Loiars gave Dayton its third match point and a Morehead State attack error ended the match as UD won the third set, 28-26.
Morehead State was led by Sydney Schuler with a match-high-tying nine kills and Hannah Sigala with eight kills and five blocks.
The Flyers return to action on Friday with the first of two home Atlantic 10 contests this weekend. Dayton will host Fordham at 7 p.m. at Frericks Center and admission is free.
