Box Score AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Dayton Men's Soccer team defeated the Massachusetts Minutemen 4-1 in an Atlantic 10 Conference match. The Flyers scored all four of their goals in the first half of the match.
Dayton had multiple offensive chances to begin the first half. The first chance came in the sixth minute of the game, when
Rafael Gamboa's shot went wide of the net.
Brian Richards followed this opportunity with two attempts that went wide of the goal.
After these chances, the Flyers were able to get on the scoreboard when
Amass Amankona's pass found Gamboa in the 16
th minute. Gamboa was able secure the pass and put the ball in the right corner of the net to give the Flyers a 1-0 lead. The goal was Gamboa's second of the year.
Three minutes later,
James Haupt scored his third goal of the season on a pass from
Michael Frasca to put Dayton up 2-0.
Greg Enstone increased the lead to 3-0 in the 30
th minute. Enstone's goal was assisted by Haupt and Amankona. A Massachusetts foul in the 38
th minute resulted in a penalty kick. Amankona was able to convert the kick to extend the lead to 4-0.
Dayton took the 4-0 lead into halftime. The Flyers outshot the Minutemen 10-1 in the first half of play.
In the second half, Massachusetts began to create more offensive chances. The Minutemen's Brandon Vasquez had a scoring chance in the 49
th minute, but his attempt went wide of the goal. Mark Morris had a great scoring chance for Massachusetts in the 63
rd minute. However, his shot was saved by
Chris Froschauer. Â
Massachusetts finally entered the scoring column in the 84
th minute. Peter Alvarenga scored his first goal of the season on an assist by Jake Alvaro.
The Minutemen had eight shots in the second half, compared to Dayton's four. Even though Dayton had fewer attempts in the second half, the Flyers outshot Massachusetts 14-9.
"Our first half was one of our best of the entire season," said Head Coach
Dennis Currier. "We had excellent ball speed and attacked the wide areas very well. All four goals came from excellent passing combinations. I thought UMass did well in the second half by getting pressure on us and taking us out of our rhythm. It was a good way to start off the road trip."
The win gives the Flyers a 6-3-3 overall record and 2-0-1 record in the Atlantic 10. Massachusetts falls to 1-10-1 on the year and 0-2-1 in the conference.
The Flyers will finish the weekend with a match against the Rhode Island Rams on Sunday October 19
th at 1:00p.m. The match will be played at the URI Soccer Complex in Kingston, Rhode Island. Â Coach Currier will look to win his 100
th game as head coach of the Flyers.
