Box Score (PDF)DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Dayton volleyball team posted its third-consecutive and 12th straight-set sweep of the season Sunday afternoon by defeating Rhode Island, 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-17), at Frericks Center. The Flyers were led offensively by junior
Alaina Turner with a match-high 10 kills to go with eight digs, two blocks and one service ace.
Also for the Flyers, freshman
Jane Emmenecker set 31 assists to go with four digs and four blocks while junior
Janna Krafka passed a match-high 15 digs. Senior
Isolde Hannan chipped in four kills and tallied seven blocks.
Rhode Island (13-7, 4-3 A-10) jumped ahead of Dayton (19-5, 7-1 A-10) 3-1 in the first set but the Flyers evened the game up at three points apiece with a Jendryk kill and a Ram attack error. An Emmenecker-Hannan assisted block gave UD its first lead at 6-5 and the two squads traded points through an 11-11 tie. With its 5-0 spurt, Dayton took a four-point advantage at 15-11, forcing Rhode Island into a timeout. The Flyer lead stretched to six, 20-14, but the Rams rallied to cut it to two, 20-18. Hannan laid down a kill to give UD set point at 24-18 and the Flyers took the set, 25-19, with a kill from Jendryk.
Set started with the Rams up, 4-2, on the Flyers but UD scored four straight to turn the tables as Dayton took over the 6-4 advantage. A kill from Erhahon evened the set at 10-all but URI scored the next two to pull ahead, 12-10. An Erhahon-Loiars assisted block set the score at 20-16 in favor of the Flyers and back-to-back service aces from Lauren Gresham gave UD the 25-18 second-set win.
The Flyers found themselves on the wrong end of a 5-1 deficit to begin the third set but UD rallied to take over the lead at 9-8 after scoring four consecutive points. The advantage stretched to four, 14-10, and Rhody signaled for a break. Dayton led Rhode Island by as many as eight, 20-12, down the stretch before URI burned its second timeout of the set. Match point was set up by a Loiars kill and the Flyers, took the set, 25-17, and the match, 3-0.
The Rams were led by Catie Steffen with 10 kills and Audrey Castro with 11 digs.
Dayton will be hitting the road on Wednesday for a mid-week, non-conference match at Eastern Kentucky. First serve between the Flyers and Colonels is set for 5:30 p.m. in Richmond, Ky.
