DAYTON, Ohio - In its Atlantic 10 home opener, the University of Dayton volleyball team recorded a straight-set sweep (25-16, 25-19, 25-18) of new A-10 foe Davidson Friday night at Frericks Center. Junior Jenna Jendryk led the Flyer attack with a match-high 11 kills and the team extended its winning streak to seven matches.
Freshman Jane Emmenecker posted the match's only double-double with 39 assists and 11 digs while senior Isolde Hannan tallied nine kills to zero errors for an .818 hitting percentage to go with two blocks. Senior Rachel Jones passed a match-high 14 digs.
Dayton (14-4, 3-0 A-10) rattled off eight-straight points to open the match and Davidson (2-10, 0-2 A-10) had to call an early timeout. The Wildcats would score back-to-back points but the Flyers stretched the lead to 11, 15-4, on a service ace by freshman Kelsey Osgood. Davidson would get no closer than seven down the stretch as Dayton reached set point at 24-16. Emmenecker served up an ace to give the Flyers the first-set win.
A kill from Turner capped a 6-1 run for the Flyers to start off the second set and Dayton stretched its lead to six, 11-5, after a kill from freshman Jessica Sloan. The Wildcats rallied to cut the Flyer advantage to one, 13-12, following a UD attack error and DC evened the score at 16-all with an assisted block. Dayton answered by scoring three straight and was ahead six, 23-17, on a Davidson misfire. Loiars recorded the final point of the set for the Flyers with a kill as UD picked up the 25-19 win to go up 2-0 for the match.
Despite falling behind 3-1 in the third set, Davidson rallied to take the lead at 5-4 on an assisted block. The Wildcat lead was three, 11-8, but the Flyers would tie it up at 11 points apiece with a Sloan service ace and retake the lead at 14-13 after a Davidson attack error. A kill from Hannan gave UD a four-point lead, 20-16, and DC called for a break. Out of the timeout, the Wildcats would score only two more points as the Flyers won the set, 25-18, and the match, 3-0.
The Wildcats were led by Hannah Rau with eight kills, Emily Franklin recorded five blocks and Mikayla Derochie set 17 assists.
The Flyers return to action Sunday as they play host to the VCU Rams. First serve is set for 1 p.m. at Frericks Center and admission is free.
