Flyers Extend Winning Streak to Eight Matches

DAYTON, Ohio - With its 3-1 (25-18, 23-25, 25-20, 25-20) win over VCU Sunday afternoon at Frericks Center, the University of Dayton volleyball team extended its winning streak to eight matches including a 4-0 start in Atlantic 10 Conference play. Three Flyers posted double-double digit kills including junior Alaina Turner with 13 kills, 11 digs, three blocks and a career-high eight service aces.

Also for the Flyers, junior Jill Loiars also had 13 kills and junior Jenna Jendryk chipped in 11 kills and two blocks. Junior Janna Krafka passed 20 digs and freshman Jane Emmenecker equaled her career high with 50 assists.

Dayton (15-4, 4-0 A-10) got off to a quick start against VCU (8-8, 2-1 A-10) in the first set, jumping out to the 7-1 lead. The Flyer advantage was seven, 10-3, after a kill from Loiars and eight at 15-7 following a 3-0 spurt by UD. The Rams were able to cut the Flyer advantage to four several times but would get no closer as a VCU service error gave UD set point at 24-18. Freshman Jessica Sloan served up an ace as the Flyers took the first set, 25-18, and a 1-0 match lead.

VCU came out swinging in the second set, taking a 7-2 lead in the early going after four consecutive UD attack errors. The Flyers rallied to pull within two, 13-11, and the match was even at 14 points apiece after a 3-0 run by Dayton. Six ties later both teams were knotted at 21 and a kill by Loiars gave Dayton a one-point advantage late in the set. Two points for the Rams turned the tables and then VCU held set point at 24-23. VCU was able to seal the second-set win, 25-23, to even the match at one set apiece.

The Rams again got the jump on the Flyers in the third set, going ahead by four, 5-1, to open the frame. Dayton rattled off seven-straight points to take over control at 9-6 but VCU would tie the set at 10-10 with a 3-0 of run of its own. The Flyer lead was one, 12-11, when UD turned it on scoring six consecutive points to push the advantage to seven, 18-11. Loiars laid down a kill to give the Flyers set point at 24-19 and Turner tallied the set-winning kill at 25-20 for Dayton.

After scoring the first two points of the fourth frame, VCU held the advantage through a 7-7 tie. The game was tied again at nine points apiece when the Flyers picked up back-to-back points to take over the lead, 11-9. The Rams briefly held a one-point advantage at 14-13 but the Flyers went on a seven-point tear to pull ahead, 20-14. VCU served into the net to give UD match point at 24-19 and Jendryk scored the last point of the match to give the Flyers the 25-20 set win and a 3-1 match victory.

The Rams were led by Kalah Jones with a match-high 14 kills and Cecilia Aragao with VCU's only double-double with 36 assists and 15 digs.

Dayton returns to action next weekend with matches at George Mason on Friday, Oct. 10 and at George Washington on Saturday, Oct. 11. Both matches are set to begin at 7 p.m.
