Box Score (PDF)RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Dayton volleyball team claimed a 3-1 (25-10, 20-25, 25-19, 28-26) win over VCU Friday evening at the Rams' Siegel Center. Three Flyers posted double-digit kills for the match while senior Isolde Hannan recorded 10 blocks.
Junior Alaina Turner led the team with 12 kills to go with nine digs, six blocks and three service aces while junior Jenna Jendryk added 10 kills and five blocks. Junior Jill Loiars also tallied 10 kills and junior Janna Krafka passed a match-high 16 digs. Freshman Jane Emmenecker recorded the Flyers' only double-double of the game with 46 assists and 12 digs.
The Flyers out-hit the Rams, .232 to .127, and posted 51 kills to VCU's 43. As a team, UD recorded 14 blocks to VCU's 10.
The first four points of the match went to Dayton (22-5, 9-1 A-10) before a service error gave VCU (13-11, 6-4 A-10) its first point. The lead had blossomed to 8-2 on the strength of three kills from Turner when the Rams called for timeout. Out of the break, UD continued to dominate VCU and the Flyers would have 11 points before the Rams could score again. Emmenecker's first kill of the night set the score at 17-5 in favor of the Flyers and at 19-5, the Rams burned their second timeout. VCU would get no closer than 13 at 23-10 and a kill from Hannan and a Ram attack error ended the set at 25-10 in favor of the Flyers.
The Rams started strong in the second set scoring the first three points of the frame. Dayton cut the VCU lead to one, 5-4, with an Erhahon-Turner block but the Rams were up five, 9-4, after rattling off four straight. VCU served up an ace at 11-6 and UD called for a break. A 4-0 spurt capped by a Jendryk kill pulled the Flyers to within two, 14-12, and a kill from Turner set the score at 15-14 but that would be as close as UD would get. The Rams led by four, 23-19, and was able to take the set at 25-20 with a kill from Uzoamaka Ibeh.
With three ties in the early going of the third set, VCU would get the first two-point lead at 5-3. A 3-0 Ram run was squashed by a Loiars kill and the game was tied at eight-all after a Hannan-Loiars block. The Flyers' first lead of the set came at 10-9 as Emmenecker served up an ace and the UD 4-0 run was capped by another assisted block. The Rams signaled for a break with the Flyers leading, 12-9, and out of the timeout, VCU rallied to retake the advantage at 17-16. Dayton scored seven consecutive points to close out the third set with a 25-19 win as the Flyers went up 2-1 on the Rams for the match.
VCU was up 3-1 in the fourth set but UD pulled even at five points apiece on a Ram attacking error. A Hannan-Jendryk assisted block tied the frame again, 8-8, but a Flyer service error gave the Rams the advantage, 10-9. VCU pushed its lead to 16-11 on a strong swing from Kalah Jones but back-to-back Ram attack errors cut their advantage to two, 19-17. A kill from Turner knotted the two squads at 19-19 and another VCU attack error gave UD the lead a point later. The Flyers and Rams traded points, ties and leads until Dayton earned match point at 24-23. The tables turned as VCU recorded a kill and a UD attack error handed the Rams the 25-24 set point. In the end, Dayton would score the winning point, 28-26, to take the match, 3-1.
The Rams were led by Jones with a match-high 18 kills to go with 10 digs while Cecilia Arago also posted a double-double for VCU with 38 assists and 15 digs.
The Flyers return to action on Sunday with a 1 p.m. match at Davidson.
