#UDWSOC SEASON ENDS IN NCAA TOURNAMENT

Dayton Fell Behind 4-0 In The First Half To #14 Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The University of Dayton (12-9-2) fell 4-0 to No. 14 Virginia Tech in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament Saturday night at Thompson Field.  The Hokies scored four first-half goals and the Flyers couldn't recover, despite playing a solid second half.

This marks Dayton's ninth appearance in the NCAA tournament and the third time these two teams have faced off in the NCAA Tournament (2009, 2010 and 2014).

The Hokies (15-5-0) had 23 shots to Dayton's four, including 16 shots on goal. Virginia Tech scored all four goals in the first half in about a 15-minute span (the first coming at 14:46 and the last at 29:58).

Redshirt junior Heather Betancourt had a career-high 12 saves in goal for UD.

Sophomore Murielle Tiernan scored two goals, including the game-winner, for Virginia Tech, her 12th and 13th of the season in the 15th and 26th minute. Senior Katie Yensen (21st minute) and freshman Alani Johnson (30th minute) also scored for Tech.

The Hokies advanced to the NCAA College Cup in 2013, falling 3-2 to Florida State in the national semifinal. Virginia Tech will play Georgetown (in an upset when they advanced on PKs over third-seeded West Virginia) next weekend in the NCAA Second Round at Penn State.

This was the final match in the careers of seniors Haley Keller, Allison Klinefelter, Chelsea Rose and Kelsey Smigel. These seniors won three A-10 regular/tournament championships and made two NCAA appearances. They are 19th nationally in wins throughout their collegiate careers (59).
