DAYTON -- Behind Kendall Pollard's career-high 16 points, the University of Dayton Flyers dealt Eastern Michigan its first loss of the season, defeating the Eagles 73-64.
Jordan Sibert and
Dyshawn Pierre chipped in 15 points each, while
Scoochie Smith dealt out five assists and had a career high eight rebounds to go along with 10 points. Pierre was six-of-seven from the field, and had four assists. Sibert had a career-high seven rebounds.
Dayton took a 28-26 lead into halftime as the Flyers worked to shoot around Eastern Michigan's 2-3 Syracuse-style zone. The Eagles meanwhile had their own struggles, going 1-12 from three point range in the first half.
Dayton came out hot after the half, going on an 11-2 run to extend the lead to 39-28. Eastern Michigan was able to hang in the game though, as the Eagles found their three point stroke, going 6-14 in the second half.
Behind an 8-0 run with all the points coming from guard Raven Lee, EMU cut the lead to three at the nine minute mark, and eventually tied it back up at 56 with just under six minutes to play.
Dayton would rally after the tie, and go on a 9-0 run themselves to put the game away for good.
As a team, Dayton shot 45.7 (21-46) percent from the floor and 35.7 (5-14) percent from three. UD out rebounded the Eagles 42-30, who came in with a rebounding margin of +8.7 per game.Â
The Flyers took away a big weapon in EMU's arsenal. Eastern Michigan came into the game ninth in the nation in offensive rebounding, averaging 16.1 offensive boards a game. Dayton held the Eagles to just six, even though they only shot 37.3 (22-59) percent from the floor.
EMU's Lee led all scorers with 26 points in the game.
Pollard also matched his career high in rebounds, finishing one shy of the double-double with nine. In his last three games he has established new career highs in points twice (15 at Miami, 16 vs. EMU) and matched his career-high in rebounds twice (9 vs. UIC and EMU).
Dayton improves its to 6-1 on the season and has won four straight. Eastern Michigan falls to 7-1. The Flyers will play their third consecutive MAC school when as Bowling Green visits UD Arena Tuesday, Dec. 9. Tip set for 7 p.m. ET
