HILTON HEAD, S.C. - With its final round of 311, the University of Dayton men's golf team wrapped up its first tournament of the spring 2014 season at Francis Marion University's Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate. The Flyers finished in 15th place overall with a three-round score of 315-320-311=946. Freshman
Nick Paxson led the team with his 54-hole total of 76-79-79=231 (t-44th).
The two-day tournament was held at Wexford Plantation course, which measures 6,828 yards and is a par 72 layout.
Freshman
Caleb Wolters also matched his first-round total of 78 in UD's final 18 holes, putting him in a tie for 63rd place with a 78-81-78=237 (+21) while junior
George Rohde, III's final-round score of 74 was the squad's low round of the weekend. He finished in a tie for 66th place (82-82-74=238).
Senior
Andrew Steffensmeier's 79-84-83=246 (+30) ranked 80th overall and junior
Craig Purpus carded a final-round score of 87, dropping him several spots in the standings. Purpus' 54-total for the event was 83-78-87=248 (+42), placing him 83rd.
Freshman
Kevin Wargo rounded out the Flyers' participating in the tournament, playing as an individual. He fired rounds of 90, 83 and 86 for a total of 259 and an 88th-place finish.
The Flyers will return to action March 10-11 when they head to Pinehurst, N.C., for the Pinehurst Intercollegiate. The 2014 competition will again be held at Pinehurst No. 8, as well as the Famed Pinehurst No. 2 (Site of the 2014 U.S. Open and U.S. Women's Open.) Practice rounds will held at No. 8. Championship rounds one and three will be on No. 8 while No. 2 will play host to the second round. The Intercollegiate is free and the public is welcome (spectator carts are prohibited).
