NASHVILLE - The University of Dayton softball team closed out the Tennessee State Tiger Classic with a 4-3 win over the host Tigers Sunday afternoon at Tiger Field. Senior Alysha Isaacson knocked in what proved to be the game-winning run during her pinch-hit at-bat in the seventh inning.
Junior Tiffany Ricks tallied her third home run of the season in the first inning as four different Flyers recorded hits in the game.
With runners on first and second, Ricks blasted a long ball over the fence recording three RBI and putting the Flyers up, 3-0, in the top of the first inning.
The score remained the same until the bottom of the fifth inning when Tennessee State was able to get a run back with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly out. The Flyers were able to get out of inning with no more damage and held onto the 3-1 lead heading into the sixth.
With freshman Gabrielle Snyder on third following a Tiger fielding error, senior Isaacson brought her across with a two-out, RBI single and she made it to second on another TSU fielding error. Going into the bottom of the seventh, UD was ahead 4-1.
The Tigers loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh and Lindsey Burgess singled in a run and Kare Morris' sacrifice fly out pulled Tennessee State to within one, 4-3. The next Tiger batter flied out to end the inning and the game as the Flyers picked up the win.
Snyder (3-1) earned the win in the circle for Dayton after throwing a complete game. She struck out a career-high five batters while walking one and gave up two earned runs on nine hits.
Shea Morris (3-5) was charged with the loss for Tennessee State. She put in five innings of work, striking out four while walking one and giving up three earned runs. Olivia Gamache closed out the game for the Tigers, throwing two innings, striking out one and walking one while giving up one earned run.
The Flyers return to action March 1-2 as they travel to Elon, N.C., for the Elon Phoenix Tournament. Dayton will square off against the host Phoenix Saturday, March 1 at 2:30 p.m.
