ELON, N.C. - The University of Dayton softball team found its offense against Coppin State Sunday morning, defeating the Eagles 15-7 in the first game of the day at Elon's Phoenix Tournament. Three Flyers tallied three or more hits in the win and two combined for three home runs on the morning.

Senior Rachel Archer and junior Tiffany Ricks each recorded four hits while freshman Gabrielle Snyder was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate. Seniors Jordan Jennings and Kasi Vazquez knocked out home runs with Vazquez tallying two.

The Flyers out-hit the Eagles, 19-8, and UD (4-9) committed two errors to CSU's (0-3) five miscues.

Coppin State opened the game with a lead-off solo shot over the left-field fence and the Eagles held the 1-0 advantage until the top of the third. Archer scored the Flyers' first run of the game after Jennings reached on an error and, with two on, Snyder singled in Jennings. Ricks made it home in a double-steal situation as freshman Hannah DeSalvo was thrown out a third as Dayton took the 3-1 lead.

The Eagles added another run in the bottom of the fourth when a runner was singled in from third. Dayton answered in the top of the fifth with a huge four-run inning. Vazquez knocked out a long ball with Ricks on second for two RBI and freshman Katie Ryan was batted in on Trotta's double to left center. Archer also picked up a RBI in the frame, plating Trotta from second on a single to left center. The Flyers pushed their lead to 7-2.

In the bottom of the fifth, Coppin State led off with a double and the batter was replaced on the bag by a pinch runner. A passed ball plated the runner for the Eagles for CSU's lone run in the fifth. After a scoreless sixth for Dayton, Coppin State added two more scores in the bottom of the inning. With the bases loaded, an Eagle single brought across two runners, cutting the Flyer lead to 7-5.

Dayton exploded for eight runs in the top of the seventh inning to put the game out of reach. Senior Alysha Isaacson picked up two RBI in a pinch-hit appearance for UD and Jennings blasted her first homer of the season for two RBI as well. With two runners on, Vazquez sent out her second home run of the game, scoring three more for UD and Archer tallied another RBI with a single that brought home sophomore Katelyn Gibson. Heading into the last half inning of the contest, UD led CSU, 15-5.

Coppin State was able to get two runs back in the seventh on a two-RBI single but that would be the end of the rally as Dayton got out of the frame with no more damage. The Flyers would claim the 15-7 win.

Junior Kayla English (1-5) was credited with the win for the Flyers after throwing 5.2 innings. She struck out one batter to three walks and gave up three earned runs on five hits. Junior Lyndsey Diggs closed out the game for UD, tossing 1.1 innings while striking out one, walking one and giving up two earned runs.

Barker (0-2) took the loss for the Eagles after working 4.1 innings in the circle. She struck out one, walked two and gave up four earned runs on eight hits. Vogel tossed two innings and Denlinger finished up the last two outs of the game.
