LUTZ, Fla. - The University of Dayton men's golf team fired a team round of 301 for the first 18 holes of the 2014 Atlantic 10 Championship Friday afternoon at TPC Tampa Bay. The Flyers sit in third place overall while junior George Rohde, III leads the team with his one-over-par 72 to sit tied for sixth place out of 50 competitors. The par-71 course is being played at 6,898 yards.

VCU is the field's leader with a team total of a two-over-par 286 while Richmond is in second place at eight-over 292 - just nine strokes ahead of Dayton.

"Overall I am very pleased with our play and position after round one," commented head coach Gip Hoagland. "We made a couple of mistakes coming in today that cost us a little bit. After the round, we got in some work and we will be ready to fix those for tomorrow's round."

Rohde got ahead over the first nine holes with three birdies but a total of four bogeys pushed his first-round total to 72. Freshman Caleb Wolters finished the first day of competition with a four-over-par 75 and is tied for 11th place.

Sophomore Thomas Goss is one stroke behind Wolters after firing a round of 76 (+6), which included two birdies on the day. Goss is tied for 15th place while freshman Nick Paxson turned in a round of 78, shooting seven over par and finishing the day tied for 24th overall.

Senior Andrew Steffensmeier rounds out the team scoring for the day with a 10-over-par 81. Steffensmeier struggled on the last two holes of the day, slipping to a tie for 35th place.

The Flyers will tee off tomorrow beginning at 9:45 a.m. from the first tee for second round play. UD will be playing with Richmond and VCU. Live scoring will be available via GolfStat.com.
