SOFTBALL SPLITS WITH TOLEDO AT SCOTT PARK

Gabrielle Snyder Led the Flyers Offensively with Three Hits on the Day

TOLEDO, Ohio - The University of Dayton softball team split its doubleheader at Toledo Wednesday at UT's Scott Park Complex. The Rockets claimed game one, 6-0, and the Flyers took the nightcap, 9-4. Freshman Gabrielle Snyder led UD with three hits on the day while senior Kasi Vazquez belted out her team-best eighth home run of the season in the fifth inning of game two scoring what proved to be the winning runs.

Despite recording four hits and drawing two walks, Dayton (15-22) was unable to put a run up on the board in its first game at Toledo (14-24). The Rockets scored a single run in both the second and fourth innings but put up a three-spot in the fifth after walking in a run and a two-RBI single. UT added one more run in the sixth for the final margin of 6-0.

Junior Kayla English (9-10) was charged with the loss for the Flyers after working 4.2 innings. She struck out three to zero walks while giving up two earned runs on five hits. Sophomore Emily Froment tossed one out of relief facing four batters in the fifth inning and junior Lyndsey Diggs closed out the game in the circle for UD, throwing one inning and recording one strike out while giving up one run on one hit.

Emily Anderson (13-11) earned the win for the Rockets after throwing a complete-game shutout. She struck out nine batters to two walks and allowed four hits.

Dayton got the offense going in the second inning with a RBI-single from Snyder, a sacrifice flyout by sophomore Kennedy Haynes and a RBI-double from senior Dana Trotta as the Flyers took the quick 3-0 lead. Toledo would even the game at three runs apiece in the bottom of the fourth frame with a RBI-double and a two-run homer.

The Flyers answered in the top of the fifth when Vazquez tallied her eight home run of the season, a two-run long-ball down the left line to give UD back the lead at 5-3 and Dayton never looked back. Three insurance runs were tacked on in the top of the sixth with back-to-back RBI doubles and senior Alysha Isaacson batted in junior Natalie Mariano to put the Flyers ahead, 9-3. The Rockets lead of the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run but that would be the end of the scoring for both teams as the Flyers held on for the 9-4 nightcap win.

English (10-10) was credited with the win for Dayton as the pitcher of record when the Flyers retook the lead for good. Snyder (2) collected the save after she re-entered the game in the bottom of the fifth and pitched effectively for the final three innings. She worked 6.2 innings while giving up three earned runs on six hits and struck out six batters to three walks.

Allie Berry (0-3) took the loss for the Rockets after working six innings in the circle. She walked three batters and gave up seven earned runs on 11 hits. Sammy Emery pitched the final inning for Toledo.

The Flyers return to action Thursday evening with a single game against cross-town rival Wright State. First pitch between the Flyers and the Raiders is set for 4 p.m. at UD Softball Stadium.
