Photo GalleryCLEVELAND, Ohio - The University of Dayton volleyball team picked up a straight-set sweep of Navy Saturday evening in the Flyers final match of the 2014 Cleveland State Invitational held at CSU's Woodling Gymnasium. The set scores were 32-30, 25-22 and 25-14 in favor of UD and junior Alaina Turner led the Flyers offensively with 15 kills and 12 digs, her third double-double of the tournament.
Also for the Flyers, freshman Amber Erhahon tied her career high with nine kills and tallied a career-high seven (1s-6a) blocks while freshman Jane Emmenecker narrowly missed a double-double with 41 assists and nine digs. Junior Janna Krafka passed a match-high 17 digs and with her 62 total digs this weekend, Krafka moves into fifth place all-time in UD's record book.
Dayton (6-3) jumped out to the 7-3 advantage on Navy (3-6) early in the first set in the strength of five Flyer kills. The UD advantage was four at 10-6 when Navy scored five straight, taking over the lead, 11-10. With the set tied at 17-17, Navy was able to take over the lead with a kill from Katie Sylakowski but Dayton turned the tables with a 22-21 advantage on a Mid net violation. Navy was able to reach set point at 24-23 but Dayton stayed alive and tied the set at 28-28 on a kill from Loiars. The Flyers held on for the 32-20 win in the first set to go up one set to none.
The second set started off close and the two squads were tied at 5-5 but a 4-0 Dayton run gave the Flyers a four-point advantage. The lead was five, 15-10, after a solo block from Hannan and then ballooned to seven, 18-11, after a Mid attacking error. Navy got to within three, 20-17, but Turner set up set point for the Flyers at 24-21 with a kill. Dayton ended up with the 25-22 win in the second frame to take a 2-0 match lead.
Set three opened with a 5-1 run by the Flyers capped by a kill from Turner and the UD lead was six at 8-2 on a Mid ball-handling error. Dayton stretched its advantage to eight, 14-6, and stretched to as many as 12 late in the game. The Flyers held match point twice before closing out the third set, 25-14, with a Jendryk kill to take the match, 3-0.
The Midshipmen were led by Maggie Phillips with 12 kills and Alli Graf with 14 digs. Sylakowski tallied seven blocks for Navy as well.
The Flyers return to action Tuesday with a mid-week tilt against Xavier at home. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at Frericks Center. Prior to the match, all of Dayton's former All-Americans will be recognized.
