FLYERS TAKE ON IUPUI FRIDAY, MARYLAND MONDAY

Live Stats - IUPUI   I   Live Stats - Maryland

The University of Dayton men's soccer team will play a pair of road games this weekend and early next week as the Flyer continue their road trip. UD will open up at IUPUI at 7 p.m. on Friday in Indianapolis before heading east to Maryland on Monday for another 7 p.m. start time.

Dayton enters the weekend with a 2-2-1 record overall after finishing up a successful weekend at the UAB Tournament in which the Flyers did not allow a single goal. Head Coach Dennis Currier is in his 10th season at the helm and is approaching win No. 100 with 95 victories under his belt.

On the season, Dayton is averaging 1.40 goals per game while giving up just 0.80 to opponents. The Flyers are 0-1-1 away from home this season and has scored five of their seven goals in the first half. Sophomores James Haupt and Brian Richards lead the team with two goals apiece while sophomore Rafael Gamboa has a goal and a team-high three assists. Goalkeeper Chris Froschauer and central defender Lalas Abubakar have played all 472 minutes this season and have combined for three shutouts in as many games.

THE SERIES
This will be the third all-time meeting between Dayton and IUPUI with the Flyers taking both previous contests, including last year's 2-0 win in Dayton. The Flyers and Terrapins have not met before so this will be Dayton's first trip to College Park.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
IUPUI
The Jaguars are 1-3 this year, all of which came on the road. IUPUI will play its home opener against the Flyers on Friday after road losses to Bowling Green, Butler, and Wright State, and a win over Houston Baptist. Head Coach Isang Jacob is in his third year at IUPUI.

Through four games, the Jaguars have scored 1.25 goals per game and given up 1.75 goals per game. IUPUI has also allowed twice as many corner kicks as it has taken while committing more fouls. Emmauel Usen leads the team with two goals while Jonny Williams, Uriel Macias, and Joshua Ayala have one each. Goalkeepers Christian Lomeli (4 games, 12 saves) and Eduard Cortes (2 games, 10 saves) have shared duty between the posts. The Jaguars return five key players from last years team.

MARYLAND
The Terps were projected to win the Big Ten title this year after entering the season as the No. 2 team in the country and coming off their National Runner-Up performance in 2013. After a tough start to the year and a difficult schedule, Maryland is looking to get back on the right track versus the Flyers. Head Coach Sasho Cirovski is in his 23rd year with the Terps and has two national championships on his resume.

With a 1-2-2 record in the early stages of the season, the Terps have losses to Louisville and Navy with ties against UMBC and Michigan. Maryland plays Michigan State on Friday before hosting the Flyers on Monday.  The Terps have a talented squad with five different players contributing at least one goal and five with at least one assist this season. Goalkeeper Zack Steffen has made 11 saves in five starts and averages 1.10 goals allowed per game. Dan Metzger is on the MAC Hermann Player of the Year Watch List as well.

LAST OUTING
Dayton finished the UAB "Soccer for a Cure" Classic with a 1-0-1 record and didn't not allow a goal to either opponent. The Flyers defeated Jacksonville 3-0 on Friday before ending Sunday's contest with UAB in a double overtime 0-0 draw.

IUPUI earned its first victory of the season with a 3-1 comeback win over Houston Baptist Saturday. The Jaguars got second-half goals from Williams, Ayala, and Usen.

Maryland played its first conference game as a member of the Big Ten in a 1-1 double overtime draw with Michigan. The Wolverines took the initial lead, but the Terps evened the score in the 90th minute on a goal by David Kabelik.

FLYER SUCCESS
The Dayton men's program has an overall record of 453-387-72 and three NCAA tournament appearances in its history. The Flyers are also 112-77-19 in the Atlantic 10 Conference and have six conference titles between the regular season and league tournament.

UAB ALL-TOURNAMENT HONORS
The Flyers had a trio of players earn honors as Lalas Abubakar, Amass Amankona, and Chris Froschauer were recognized.

ABUBAKAR NAMED A-10 ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
The Atlantic 10 named Dayton's Lalas Abubakar as the conference Rookie of the Week on Sept. 15 for his efforts at the UAB Tournament. The sophomore from Ghana played every minute and anchored a back-line that didn't allow a goal in the two-game stretch.

AMANKONA, RICHARDS NAMED ALL-TOURNEY
The Dayton Flyer Classic wrapped up on Sept. 7 with a pair of Flyers being named to the All-Tournament team. Dayton's Brian Richards and Amass Amankona were both honored for their performances in games against High Point and Detroit.

DAYTON PICKED 4TH IN A-10
The Atlantic 10 Conference released their preseason poll and tabbed the Flyers to finish fourth in the league behind 2013 regular season champions Saint Louis, 2013 tournament champions George Mason, and NCAA Tournament participant VCU. Dayton was picked ahead of A-10 newcomers Davidson, Duquesne, and La Salle, who eliminated the Flyers from the A-10 tournament last season.

A-10 PRESEASON HONORS
Before the 2014 season, Amankona was named the Atlantic 10 All-Conference Preseason team while freshmen Dillon Nino and Lance Gaspar were named to the All-Rookie Preseason team.

PRESEASON CSM AWARDS
College Sports Madness also released their preseason All-A-10 teams and recognized a couple of Flyers ahead of 2014. Freshman Nick Hagenkord was picked as the Freshman of the Year, coming off his Kansas Gatorade Player of the Year finalist honor. Enstone was named First Team All-Conference and Froschauer was named Second Team All-Conference as well.

INTERNATIONAL FLAIR
The Dayton program has been known to recruit well outside of the U.S. and this year's team is no different. The Flyers have two student athletes from England, three from Ghana, one from Costa Rica, one from Jamaica, one from Canada, and one from the Netherlands, totaling nine international players. This is coming off the 2013 season in which the Flyers had 11 players from overseas.

FANTASTIC FRESHMEN
Dayton's squad is young as far as age is concerned with 15 freshmen making up the team. The Flyers do have faith in this class though as it is made up of an NSCAA All-American, eight US Soccer Academy participants, and a U16 USSDA National Champion. Two other players are also four-star rated recruits. The Dayton coaching staff will not be shy in letting these freshmen get on the field.

LARA RECOGNIZED AS TOP ASSISTANT
Dayton Assistant Coach Kiki Lara was honored last season as the Mid-Atlantic Region Assistant Coach of the Year. Lara is in his sixth year with the program and joined the Flyers after playing for Coach Currier at Incarnate Word.

CURRIER'S IMPACT
The head coach of the Flyers has had success at every place he has coached. Dennis Currier is in his 10th year at Dayton and holds a career record of 283-106-37 in 21 seasons and a 95-57-25 record with the Flyers. His career winning percentage of .710 ranks fifth in the nation amongst active coaches, ahead of programs like Maryland, Stanford, UCLA, and Virginia.

UP NEXT
The Flyers return home after a four-game stretch on the road to host in-state foe Ohio State on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 1 p.m. It will be Alumni Day at Baujan Field as the Flyers take on the Buckeyes.
