Box Score (PDF)JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - In the team's third sweep in as many matches, the University of Dayton volleyball team recorded a 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-13) win over Nicholls State in the Flyers final match of the 2014 UNF/JU Radisson Invitational Saturday afternoon. Junior Alaina Turner led all attackers with 17 kills while hitting at a .471 clip.
Also for the Flyers, junior Jill Loiars posted a .438 hitting percentage with eight kills and junior Janna Krafka passed a match-high 18 digs. Freshman Amber Erhahon chipped in six kills why tallying six blocks for UD.
The Flyers hit at a blistering .400 for the match, the squad's best hitting percentage on the season, and UD recorded 46 kills to NSU's 29.
Two Nicholls State (4-9) attacking errors helped Dayton (10-4) open the match with 4-1 lead and a 3-0 spurt set the score at 11-6 in favor of the Flyers. Turner served up an ace to stretch the Flyer lead to eight at 18-10 and the advantage was eight again at 22-14. Dayton reached set point at 24-13 and the Flyers took the set, 25-15, on a kill from Loiars.
Nicholls State got some momentum going in the second set, starting out with a 5-2 advantage. Trailing by two, 8-6, Turner tallied an ace on her serve and the Flyers pulled even with the Colonels with an Emmenecker-Erhahon assisted block. The two squads traded points but Turner's kill at 17-16 gave the Flyers back the lead and, two UD points later, the Colonels called for timeout. Out of the break, the Flyer run continued to push the advantage to seven, 23-16. Turner scored the last two points of the set with a kill and a service ace to give Dayton the 25-18 second-set win.
The Flyers opened the third set by scoring four straight and the lead was six, 11-5, on a kill from Turner. A 7-0 run mid-way through the set stretched the UD advantage to 10, 20-10, and the Flyers cruised the rest of the way. It was match point at 24-13 and Turner knocked down the match-winning kill to give UD the 3-0 sweep with its 25-13 victory in the third set.
The Colonels were led by Kaci Eaton with 13 kills and Kalynn Egea passed 17 digs for NSU.
Dayton returns to action next weekend as it opens Atlantic 10 Conference play at Duquesne on Friday, Sept. 26.
