Two Double-Doubles, 12 Team Blocks for the Flyers

PHILADELPHIA - To finish off a perfect weekend on the road, the University of Dayton volleyball team took down Pennsylvania, 3-1 (25-13, 23-25, 25-15, 25-18), at The Palestra. Junior Alaina Turner recorded a match-high 17 kills to go with 10 digs while freshman Jane Emmenecker also tallied a double-double with 48 assists and 10 digs.

Also for the Flyers, junior Jill Loiars added 12 kills to go with a career-high-tying seven blocks and senior Isolde Hannan burned up the nets with nine kills to zero errors in 15 attempts for a .600 hitting percentage to go with her seven blocks as well.

Senior Rachel Jones was one off her career high with 14 digs to lead UD and junior Janna Krafka passed 10 digs on the afternoon as well. Freshman Amber Erhahon also chipped in nine kills and tallied four blocks.

On the day, UD continues to hit well, posting a .364 hitting percentage to Penn's .129 and the Flyers laid down 60 kills to the Quakers' 43.

Dayton (13-4) scored the first two points of the game but Penn (3-9) was able to take the 6-3 lead after a 4-0 run. The Flyers would answer with a 6-1 run to take back the advantage, 9-7, and the final tie of the frame would come at 9-9. A Hannan-Jendryk assisted block put Dayton up, 11-9, and a 4-0 spurt pushed the Flyers' lead to six, 17-11. UD gave up only two more points the rest of the way and a kill from Loiars sealed the 25-13 first set win for the Flyers.

Penn started off quick in the second set, taking the 4-1 lead after consecutive Dayton attack errors. The Quaker lead was four, 7-3, but the Flyers pulled to within one, 7-6, with a 3-0 spurt. A kill from Jendryk evened the set at 12 points apiece but the Penn lead was back to four at 21-17. The Flyers were able to even the set at 22-all but the Quakers held on for the 25-23 win in set two to even the match, 1-1.

It was three-straight points for the Flyers to open set three but the Quakers pulled even with three consecutive kills. A Penn kill tied the two squads at 6-6 but Dayton was able to regain the lead on back-to-back assisted blocks from Hannan and Loiars. The Flyer lead was three, 12-9, after a kill from Jendryk and then it stretched to 10, 21-11, thanks to an 8-1 UD run. A Penn service error gave Dayton set point, 24-14, and Turner laid down a kill as the Flyers took the 2-1 match advantage with a 25-15 victory in set three.

The fourth set started off close but a Quaker attack error kick started a 7-0 Flyer run, setting the score at 10-5 in favor of UD. Dayton led by as many as six throughout the set, including 18-12, after a kill from Erhahon. It was match point for the Flyers at 24-17 and Turner capped the win with a kill as UD won, 25-17, to take the match, 3-1.

The Quakers were led by Alexis Genske with 12 kills and Emmy Friedler with 13 digs.

The Flyers return home next week for the team's first Atlantic 10 match at Frericks Center of the season. Dayton will host Davidson Friday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m. Admission is free.
