DAYTON --
The 106th season of University of Dayton football will commence when the Flyers open the 2014 season on Saturday, Sept. 6.  The Flyers face off against Georgetown in a 1 p.m. kickoff at Welcome Stadium.
Just before kickoff, UD will honor the memory of one of its greats.  Dayton and Pro Football Hall of Famer Chuck Noll will be remembered in a pre-game ceremony.

Before the game, a tailgate celebrating the beginning of the 2014 season will be held next to the stadium behind UD Arena.  It is free to all season ticketholders, and the cost is $5 for all other fans.  The Season-Opening Tailgate begins at 11 a.m.  Free rally towels and fan banners will be given to everyone at the tailgate.

The Flyers were picked to finish second in the Pioneer Football League in this year's preseason poll of the league's coaches.  This is the 22nd season of the PFL.

Dayton finished 7-4 overall and 5-3 in the PFL in 2013.  The Flyers finished tied for fourth in the Pioneer Football League and had their 36th winning season in the last 37 years last year.

Rick Chamberlin is beginning his seventh season as UD's head coach and returns 14 starters (seven offense, five defense, two specialists) from last season.

UD is led by four First Team Preseason All-PFL selections – quarterback Will Bardo, defensive end Pat Dowd, running back Connor Kacsor and placekicker William Will.  Bardo and Dowd are the 2014 Flyer co-captains.

Along with Bardo and Kacsor, other returning starters are receivers Branden Johnson, Ross Smith and Gabe Macis, and linemen Chris Cortopassi and Jimmy Vogel.

Dowd, defensive tackle Austen Alber, linebacker Christopher Beaschler, safety Zach Elias and Flyer Ryan Schwenke are back on defense.

Will and punter Kyle Pignatiello give the Flyers both kicking specialists back for the first time in five years.

This is the first meeting on the football field between the Flyers and the Hoyas.  The two schools have met three times in men's basketball, and once each in women's basketball, women's soccer and volleyball.
The Georgetown Hoyas (0-1) are coming off a 21-3 loss in the season opener against Wagner. Senior linebacker Nick Alfieri, along with fellow seniors defensive end Alec May and defensive tackle Jordan Richardson return on defense after being named Second Team All-Patriot League in 2013. Rob Sgarlata was elevate to head coach in February after serving on the Hoyas coaching staff for the past 18 seasons, including the last eight as Assistant Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator. Former Flyer DB and coach Mike Neuberger (Class of '05) is the Georgetown offensive coordinator.

The Flyers go on the road for the first time in 2014, traveling to Pittsburgh to meet Duquesne.  Game time is 12 noon ET.  UD returns home on Sept. 20, closing out the three-game non-conference schedule on Family Weekend against Robert Morris.
