VOLLEYBALL OUTLASTS WRIGHT STATE, 3-2, IN FLYER-RAIDER INVITE

Turner Posts Double-Double with 19 Kills, 15 Digs

FAIRBORN, Ohio - In its second match of the 2014 Flyer-Raider Invitational, the University of Dayton volleyball team held on to win 3-2 (22-25, 25-14, 23-25, 25-21, 15-6) at Wright State Saturday afternoon. Junior Alaina Turner led the Flyers with 19 kills and a career-high-tying 15 digs for the double-double.

Also for the Flyers, junior Jill Loiars tallied 13 kills and the match's only solo block while junior Janna Krafka passed 23 digs and served up two aces. Junior Angel Agu was strong on the block for UD with four stuffs to go with eight kills and freshman Jane Emmenecker set a career-high 44 assists.

UD out-hit WSU, .201 to .181, but the two were even with 55 kills each.

Dayton (3-2) found itself tied with Wright State (2-4) 3-3 early in the first set but the Flyers capped off a 4-0 run with a Turner service to take the 6-3 lead. The Raiders tied the frame again at six-all and both squads traded points with neither able to go ahead by more than two. The set was tied again at 22 points apiece but Wright State was able to reach set point with a kill and a Flyer attacking error. The Raiders claimed a 25-22 set-one win to go up, 1-0, on the Flyers.

The second set started out much like the first with Dayton edging Wright State early, 6-3. The Flyers were able to put together a 5-0 run to open a seven-point advantage and the lead was 11, 16-5, after a Raider service error. UD was able to coast to the second-set win, 25-14, to even the match at one set apiece.

With a 5-1 run to open the third set, the Flyers seem to be riding momentum from the second frame. The Raiders battled back and eventually pulled even with the Flyers, 11-11, on a kill from Katie Klusman. The tide turned in favor of WSU with back-to-back UD attack errors as Wright State went up, 16-14. A from Turner evened the game at 20-20 and it was tied against 23-all but the Raiders picked up the next two points to take the third set, 25-23.

With five ties by the teams reached 7-7 in the fourth set, neither team was going down without a fight. Falling behind the Raiders, 9-7, the Flyers rallied to even the score again at 14-all with an assisted block from Agu and Turner. Three more ties and it was 17 apiece but a Krafka service ace gave the Flyers the two-point advantage at 19-17. After a 5-0 run, Dayton reached set point with a six-point lead, 24-18, and closed out the frame with the 25-21 win to force a fifth set.

A kill from Turner capped off a 6-1 run for Dayton to open set five but Wright State stayed alive, cutting the lead to two, 6-4. The Flyers would let the Raiders score two more points in the deciding set before taking the match, 3-2, with the 15-6 fifth-set win.

The Raiders were led by Klusman with 17 kills and Jessie Thornton with 28 digs.

The Flyers return to action tonight as they close out the Flyer-Raider Invitational at home against Bakersfield. First serve is set for 8 p.m. and admission is free.
