DAYTON, Ohio – Despite dropping the first set, the University of Dayton volleyball team remained perfect in Atlantic 10 Conference play with a 3-1 (23-25, 25-11, 25-14, 25-16) over VCU Sunday afternoon at Frericks Center. The Flyers sit alone in first place atop league standings.
STATS OF THE MATCH• Senior
Alaina Turner led four Flyers in double figures with a match-high 18 kills and she narrowly missed the double-double with nine digs. Senior
Janna Krafka passed a match-high 17 kills for UD.
• Sophomore
Amber Erhahon tallied a career-high 15 kills to one error for a .667 hitting percentage while senior
Jenna Jendryk had 11 kills and also hit at .667.
• Sophomore
Jane Emmenecker set 50 assists and passed six digs while senior
Jill Loiars was the fourth Flyer with double-digit kills (11).
• VCU was led by Kalah Jones with 15 kills and Samantha Blaze with 12 digs while Indigo Thompson set 38 assists for the Rams.
• Dayton out-hit VCU, .362 to .172, and the Flyers recorded 60 kills to the Rams' 44. UD served up seven aces to VCU's one.
SET-BY-SET• Set One: Sophomore
Jessica Sloan served up an ace to give Dayton an early 4-2 lead over VCU but the Rams later used a 3-0 spurt to take a 9-7 advantage over the Flyers. VCU maintained the lead through a 16-16 tie and Erhahon laid down a go-ahead kill. A kill from Turner capped a 4-0 Flyer run to put UD ahead, 21-17, but the Rams rallied to take the set, 25-23.
• Set Two: It was a 5-0 start for Dayton in the second set and a kill from Erhahon set the score at 10-2 in favor of the Flyers. A solo block and subsequent kill from Turner gave UD a 22-9 advantage and Dayton sailed to a 25-11 win in the second frame.
• Set Three: Dayton got off to a fast start in the third game as well, jumping out to a 10-2 lead on the strength of four kills from Turner. Three consecutive Flyer kills gave UD a 10-point, 19-9 lead late in the set and Dayton went on to win, 25-14.
• Set Four: The fourth set was tied at 1, 3 and 4 before VCU took the 6-4 lead over UD. The score was 9-7 in favor of the Rams when the Flyers rattled off three straight points to turn the tables, pulling in front 10-9. A 5-0 Dayton run pushed the Flyer lead to four, 15-11, and the UD advantage was seven at 21-14. VCU would only score two more points as UD took the set 25-16 and the match, 3-1.
UP NEXT• Dayton will play an out-of-conference match on Wednesday as it travels to Cincinnati to take on Xavier. First serve is set for 6 p.m. between the Flyers and Musketeers at Cintas Center.
