DAYTON CRUSHES TOLEDO WEDNESDAY, 12-6

TOLEDO, Ohio - The University of Dayton baseball team faced the University of Toledo Wednesday afternoon and ended their losing skid with a dominant performance.

Dayton opened the scoring with an RBI single to left by senior Alex Harris in the top of the first.

The Flyers piled on to their advantage in the third with a two-run double by senior A.J. Ryan and an RBI single by senior Zach Schira.

Toledo got a run back in the bottom of the third with a sacrifice fly, making it a 4-1 contest.

The Dayton attack continued in the fifth when senior Sergio Plasencia led off the inning with a solo home run to right, his first of the season. Schira drove in his second run of the game and sophomore Matt Poland drew a bases loaded walk to extend the lead to six runs. Senior Greg Rhude capped off the frame with a bases-clearing double to center, putting Dayton in double digit runs.

The Rockets managed a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth, but Dayton still led by seven runs.

In the seventh, the Flyers got another run when Rhude stole home on a double steal attempt. Harris followed up with an RBI groundout for Dayton's 12th run.

With such a large advantage, the Flyers easily held on for their sixth victory of the season. UD totaled seven hits in the game and drew 11 walks from the Toledo pitching staff. Rhude led the way with three RBI and a 2-for-3 outing. Harris, Ryan, and Schira chipped in two RBI apiece as well. Sophomore Brad Burkhart scored three teams in the lead-off role for the Flyers.

Starter Mason Kutruff (W, 3-0) picked up his team-leading third win with a 5 1/3 inning performance, allowing just three runs on six hits while striking out five. Relievers Jason Johnson, Tyson Schnitkey, Nick Gobert, Sam Brunner, and Ben Polansky maintained the lead for Dayton over the final 3 2/3 innings.

The Flyers (6-12) will return home to open Atlantic 10 play this weekend with a three-game series with Massachusetts starting Friday at 3 p.m.
