FLYER BASEBALL LOSES 12-INNING AFFAIR

DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton baseball team squared off against Massachusetts for the final time in the series on Sunday and dropped a 10-8 decision in 12 innings.

The Minutemen scored a single run in the top of the second on a Dayton error, jumping out to an early 1-0 lead.

Dayton answered in the bottom of the third with an RBI single by A.J. Ryan after the bases were loaded with nobody out. A fielder's choice by junior Aaron Huesman followed, allowing senior Sergio Plasencia from third. That gave UD a 2-1 lead.

In the top of the fourth, UMass evened the score at 2-2 with an RBI single up the middle. Another hit to left scored the go-ahead made it a 3-2 Minutemen advantage. Before the inning was done, UMass would have a 5-2 lead.

UMass added to the margin in the fifth and sixth innings with single runs in both, pushing the Dayton deficit to five runs.

The Flyers closed the gap in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI groundout by sophomore Matt Poland.

In the bottom of the eighth, Plasencia and senior Alex Harris both drew bases-loaded walks to pull Dayton within two runs. Ryan then recorded an infield hit that saw an out at second, but a close call at first saw the UMass first baseman turn to argue, resulting in two runs scoring for UD. That tied the game up at 7-7 going into the ninth.

Neither team was able to score the deciding run in the ninth, meaning extra innings for the third time this season for the Flyers.

UMass would be able to get the important run in the 10th though with a single to left that scored the go-ahead runner from second.

Once again, Dayton responded in the bottom of the 10th with an RBI single to center by Plasencia, matching the Minutemen at 8-8.

It wouldn't be until the 12th that either team would strike as UMass scored two on a single to center, taking back the lead at 10-8.

The Flyers were unable to score in the bottom half of the 12th and dropped their third straight contest to the Minutemen.

In the game, Dayton out-hit UMass 13-9, but committed four errors and left 13 runners stranded. Plasencia and Ryan each had a team-high two RBI with Doring adding a 3-for-6 performance with three runs scored.

Starter Bradley Horn tossed 3 2/3 innings with five runs, just one earned, on two hits. Reliever Nick Gobert came in to pitch the next 6 1/3 innings, giving up two earned runs on six hits while striking out five. Freshman Tyson Schnitkey (L, 1-2) was saddled with the loss after giving up the winning runs in the 12th.

The Flyers (6-15, 0-3 A-10) will travel to IPFW on Tuesday for a 3 p.m. contest against the Mastadons.
