FLYERS’ DAY SPOILED BY FIVE RUNS IN LAST TWO INNINGS

DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton baseball team led late in the contest, but allowed five runs over the last two innings to suffer an 8-6 loss to Butler.

The visiting Bulldogs took the initial lead in the game with an RBI double in the top of the first.

Dayton quickly answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second capped off with an RBI single to right by senior Greg Rhude.

Butler got the lead back in the third with two runs of its own thanks to three hits and a Dayton error.

The Flyers responded again in the fourth with a RBI double to left by junior Cameron Silva, tying the game up at 3-3.

Dayton's offense went off in the sixth with back-to-back home runs by seniors Sergio Plasencia and A.J. Ryan, putting the hosts up 6-3.

In the top of the eighth, Butler started off with an RBI double to make it a two-run game. The Bulldogs followed up with another run and closed the gap further.

Butler went on to break up the save attempt with three runs in the top of the ninth, taking an 8-6 lead over Dayton.

The Flyers were unable to make a comeback of their own in the bottom of the ninth. UD ended the game with 11 hits, matching Butler's total. Ryan led the way with a 3-for-4 outing, a double, and an RBI while Plasencia drove in a pair.

Starter Mason Kutruff pitched six innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits, but did not get the decision. Junior reliever Sam Brunner (L, 0-4) gave up the decisive runs in the ninth and suffered his fourth loss of the season.

The Flyers (9-21) will head out on the road this weekend to Washington, D.C. to take on George Washington in an Atlantic 10 series.
