FLYER BASEBALL LOSES SERIES OPENER AT GW

Box Score
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The University of Dayton baseball team rallied late, but was unable to surpass George Washington Friday in the Atlantic 10 series opener.

The first five innings of the contest were a pitching duel as starting pitcher Charlie Dant held the GW batters in check.

The Colonials opened the scoring in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI double. GW added two more runs in the frame to give the Flyers a 3-0 deficit.

Senior Greg Rhude put Dayton on the board in the top of the eighth with an RBI double of his own to right-center, closing the gap to two runs. Fellow senior Sergio Plasencia followed up with an RBI double of his own to make it a 3-2 ball game.

Dayton's rally attempt fell short in the ninth inning as the Flyers dropped the 3-2 decision.

Dant (L, 1-7) pitched all eighth innings for UD, allowing three runs, only one earned, on nine hits and striking out six.

As a team, Dayton totaled six hits including a pair from Plasencia. Rhude chipped in the other RBI as well.

The Flyers (9-22, 2-8 A-10) will continue their series against the Colonials on Saturday at 1 p.m. ET.
