Baseball’s Michael Smith Jr. Drafted By The San Diego Padres

The Outfielder Was Selected In The 13th Round

PHILADELPHIA – University of Dayton baseball's Michael Smith Jr. was selected in the 13th round of the Major League Baseball Draft on Sunday afternoon. The outfielder was selected No. 395 overall by the San Diego Padres.

Smith Jr. made a clear impact in his single season with the FlyBoys, appearing in 53 of Dayton's 54 games in the spring. Named to the Atlantic 10 and ABCA/Rawlings East All-Region second teams, the Pensacola, Fla. native set the Flyers' single-season record with 38 stolen bases, checking in at second with 47 walks and fourth with both 65 runs scored and 20 hit-by-pitches.

The outfielder also earned national recognition during the season, ranking No. 67 in D1Baseball's Top 100 Outfielders.

Smith Jr. is Dayton's 20th MLB draft pick in program history, becoming the fifth FlyBoy under Jayson King to be selected. He is also the second outfielder drafted since Ryan Fleming was picked in the 18th round by the Toronto Blue Jays in 1998. He is the third Flyer to be selected by the Padres, joining Cole Tyrell and Nick Wissman.

Craig Stammen, a former right-handed pitcher for the Flyers, is the Padres' current manager.
