DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton baseball team got a crucial hit in the bottom of the ninth to take an 8-7 victory in the final game of the season.
Prior to the start of the game, the program recognized the six senior Flyers for their accomplishments during their time at Dayton. The seniors honored were
Noah Buettgen,
Alex Harris,
Sergio Plasencia,
Greg Rhude,
A.J. Ryan, and
Zach Schira.
The seniors combined to open the scoring in the bottom of the second as Schira drove in Ryan with an RBI single to center.
The Flyers doubled their advantage in the third when sophomore
Mitch Coughlin stole third and the throw down went past the Fordham third baseman for an error, allowing Coughlin to score.
In the bottom of the fifth, sophomore
Matt Poland ripped an RBI single to center, making it a 3-0 ball game. Plasencia then scored from third on a wild pitch by Fordham. Ryan then capped off the inning with an RBI single to center of his own, pushing Dayton's lead to 5-0.
The Rams were able to get on the board in the top of the sixth with an RBI double and a two-run home run. That closed the gap to 5-3.
Dayton got a run back in the bottom half of the frame on an RBI single by Coughlin.
Fordham's rally attempt began in the ninth with a pair of runs with the bases loaded. The Rams then took the lead with a two-run double to right-center, making it a 7-6 contest.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Flyers managed to tie the game back up at 7-7 on a wild pitch by the Rams. Junior
Aaron Huesman then stepped up and hit a clutch RBI single to left, scoring the game-winning run for the Flyers.
Dayton finished the game with 15 hits, including a 3-for-5 outing by Ryan and multi-hit games by Coughlin, Poland, Huesman, and
Cale Dineen.
Starter
Nick Gobert threw six innings, allowing three runs, none of them earned, while striking out a pair. Junior
Ben Polansky pitched a pair of shutout innings in relief before freshman
Tyson Schnitkey (W, 2-2) came on in the ninth and earned the victory.
The Flyers ended their 2015 season with a 16-38 record overall and a 5-19 conference mark.
