RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Dayton baseball team scored early, but were unable to get any runs late in the contest as the Flyers lost 9-2 at Richmond.
The Flyers jumped out to an early lead thanks to an RBI single by sophomore
Matt Poland, followed by an RBI double down the left field line by senior
Zach Schira.
Richmond answered in the bottom half of the opening frame with a single run. The Spiders scored again in the second to tie the game, before a third run put the hosts on top 3-2.
In the bottom of the third, Richmond scored its fourth run to extend its advantage to two. The Spiders went on to add a two-run home run in the fifth to make it a 6-2 contest.
Richmond put the game out of reach in the bottom of the eighth with another three runs, sending Dayton to a 9-2 defeat.
The Flyers totaled nine hits in the contest including hits from eight different players. Poland and Schira provided the RBI with senior
Greg Rhude adding a multi-hit game.
Starter
Noah Buettgen (L, 3-7) went five innings, giving up four earned runs on eight hits while striking out three. Freshman
Mason Kutruff came on in relief and threw three innings, giving up three runs on three hits.
The Flyers (14-35, 3-17 A-10) will finish their series with the Spiders on Sunday with a 10 a.m. start time.
