PHILADELPHIA – In its 14th-consecutive straight-set sweep of La Salle, the University of Dayton volleyball team claimed a 3-0 (25-12, 25-19, 25-13) at Tom Gola Arena Saturday night in Philly. The Flyers improve to 9-5 for the year and 2-0 in Atlantic 10 play with the win while the Explorers fall to 6-12 on the season and 0-2 in league action.
STATS OF THE MATCH• Freshman
Kendyll Brown earned her first career starting nod Saturday night, recording a career-high five kills while swinging at .714. She also tallied a career-high seven blocks to lead all players at the net.
• Senior
Alaina Turner was one of two Flyers with double-digit kills, terminating 10 attacks for Dayton. Sophomore
Amber Erhahon also had 10 kills, a new career high, and added three blocks.
• Sophomores
Jane Emmenecker and
Jessica Sloan each passed eight digs to lead the team.
• La Salle was led by Bryanna Davis with 10 kills while Jensen Sharrits passed a match-high 12 digs.
• Dayton out-hit La Salle, .318 to .022, and the Flyers tallied 36 kills to the Explorers' 25 for the match.
SET-BY-SET• Set One: Back-to-back La Salle attack errors set the score at 6-3 in favor of Dayton early in the first set. The Explorers rallied to even the set at six points apiece but the Flyer advantage was at seven, 15-8, when La Salle called for timeout. It was smooth sailing from there on out as UD picked up a quick 25-12 win in the first game.
• Set Two: A kill from Turner capped an 8-1 opening run for the Flyers in the second set. The Dayton lead was 10 at 14-4 and the Flyers led by as many as 12 throughout the frame. A late rally by the Explorers cut the Flyer advantage to five, 24-19, but UD pushed on for the 25-19 win in the second frame to go ahead, 2-0.
• Set Three: A kill from Sloan put Dayton up 7-3 in the third set and the lead was seven, 11-4, after a La Salle attacking error. The Flyers reached 20 ahead by 12 points on a block from senior
Jill Loiars and Brown and UD took the set, 25-13, on an ace from Sloan.
UP NEXT• Two matches at Frericks Center are up next for Dayton as it continues A-10 play at home next weekend. UD will welcome Fordham to town on Friday for a 7 p.m. tilt to start the weekend followed by a 1 p.m. match against Rhode Island Sunday. Admission is free.
