RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Dayton volleyball team extended its winning streak to eight with a 3-1 (25-21, 25-19, 22-25, 25-21) win at VCU Friday night. As a team, the Flyers recorded 13.5 blocks in the match.
Dayton improves its nation's-best overall record to 19-1 on the season while remaining the only unbeaten team in Atlantic 10 Conference play at 6-0. VCU moves to 13-9 on the season and 4-2 in league action.
STATS OF THE MATCH
• Junior Jessica Sloan and Sophomore Kendyll Brown each had 12 kills for Dayton. Sloan passed seven digs while Brown recorded six blocks.
• Junior Jane Emmenecker tallied the team's only double-double of the match with 41 assists and 11 digs. Sophomore Margo Wolf was the team's leading passer with 16 digs.
• Freshman Jamie Peterson also had six blocks to go with nine digs. Sophomore Lauren Bruns chipped in nine kills as well.
• VCU was led by Alicia Kandler with an 11K/10D double-double while Rebekah Strange got under a match-high 17 digs.
SET-BY-SET
• Set One: VCU's 5-1 spurt in the early going of the first set gave the Rams an 8-5 advantage and the VCU lead was four at 10-6. Dayton pulled in front, 15-13, behind a 4-0 run and a Ram attack error gave the Flyers a 19-16 lead late in the frame. A VCU ball-handling error gave UD set point at 24-20 and the Rams were able to hold once before the Flyers won the set, 25-21, with a kill from Sloan.
• Set Two: Dayton opened the second set with a 4-2 lead and the Flyers were up five, 10-5, after a kill from Brown. UD scored three-straight points to push the advantage to six, 14-8, and Dayton led by six again at 22-16. Sloan scored the Flyers' last two points as Dayton won the second game, 25-19.
• Set Three: Dayton was up 4-3 in the third set when VCU rattled off four straight to take over control at 7-4. The Flyers pulled within one at 8-7 but the Rams pushed on, using a 5-1 run to break open a 20-14 advantage. UD rallied to within one again at 22-21 but VCU held on for a 25-22 win in the third set to stay alive in the match, 2-1.
• Set Four: Back-to-back VCU attack errors put Dayton up 4-2 to get the fourth set started. The Flyer lead was pushed to four at 8-4 following two more Ram errors but VCU rallied to even the set at 12 points apiece. Dayton was able to put together a 5-1 run to put some room between the Flyers and the Rams at 19-15 but VCU was not going away. The Rams got back to within one, 21-20, but the Flyers closed out the set with three-consecutive points to win the frame, 25-21, and the match, 3-1.
